Your Boat’s Full Potential is Here: The Astonishing Volvo Penta Sterndrive Power

Open your transom with Volvo Penta sterndrive power

In 1959, Volvo Penta flipped the script on conventional marine propulsion with the introduction of the Aquamatic, the first commercially available sterndrive. The evolution of the sterndrive technology continued with the introduction of the Duoprop and DPI drive. Sixty-five years later, Volvo Penta sterndrives have proven themselves as an innovative, reliable and versatile power choice.

But for all the performance and modern technological advancements made, their most practical advantage is the same today as it was in 1959 — a clean and open transom that gets boaters closer to the water.

No Obstructions … No Limits

Unlike outboard motors that both interrupt and often bisect the transom area, sterndrive power provides more usable space and, in the process, opens up the entire stern area to greater possibilities.

Examples? Underway, both captain and passengers enjoy a clean, uninterrupted view aft. When gearing up for watersports, skiers, tubers and boarders have ample space and easy access to and from the water. While enjoying some downtime coving or on the hook, spacious full-width swim platforms provide a gathering spot where passengers can freely socialize, feet dangling in the water.

All are possible — and safe — because engine and propeller aren’t exposed, but tucked both out of sight and out of harm’s way.

How Volvo Penta Sterndrive Power Adds Versatility

Even the most mundane aspects of a day on the boat are made easier by the open transom a sterndrive provides.

Without an exposed motor to worry about damaging, boats can easily be backed into a slip. Passengers can step aboard via the swim platform and traverse its entire length without interruption. It’s even easier to load and unload gear.

Increased Fishability

One benefit that many boat buyers often overlook? Sterndrives are also fishing-friendly.

The same lack of exposed motor that benefits swimmers and skiers also gives anglers uninterrupted access to the boat’s entire stern, whether they are casting their line or trying to stay on top of an active catch moving behind the boat. The sunpad setup found on many sterndrives can also double as a raised casting deck.

Cleaner Appearance

Choosing sterndrive power also gives a boat cleaner, sleeker, dare we say more attractive lines. Rather than a motor, or, in the case of today’s higher horsepower offerings, multiple motors bolted to the transom and cluttering the swim platform, sterndrive power remains hidden from sight, with engines typically concealed below the sunpad and drive units tucked well under the swim platform.

Space for Dinghy

The open transom provided by a sterndrive also opens up additional possibilities on larger boats, namely the ability to easily carry a dinghy using a lift or davit system. Volvo Penta’s versatile sterndrive range is capable of powering boats up to 45 feet using gasoline-powered engines and up to 60 feet in length with diesel power.

Enjoy your Whole Boat

By avoiding the bulky clutter of outboard motors, Volvo Penta sterndrive offerings maximize your investment by giving you full access to your entire boat, including the all-important transom and swim platform.
