An enclosed flybridge, long-range capability, and offshore pedigree make the Maritimo M50 one of today’s most compelling cruising yachts.

By Marilyn DeMartini

At first glance, the new Maritimo M50’s profile appears lofty—almost top-heavy—with its deep freeboard and enclosed flybridge. On closer inspection, the perspective shifts to a thoughtfully engineered, roomy motoryacht with a generous 17-foot-2-inch beam, designed to comfortably accommodate two families on extended cruises or a larger group for shorter jaunts. Maritimo has focused on building long-range luxury motoryachts for over two decades, and the M50 impressively reflects that heritage.

Australian Offshore Heritage

Australia’s rugged coast and often unforgiving sea conditions demand strong, seaworthy vessels, and Maritimo has answered that call, producing yachts that balance strength, performance, and livability. As the smallest model in the M-Series Flybridge Motor Yacht line, the M50 still incorporates many of the features typically reserved for larger vessels.

While her 55-foot sibling offers additional length and a sedan configuration, the M50 stands on her own with clever design solutions. Among them is a fold-up rear swim platform that doubles as a tender rack, allowing for a more compact footprint when docking—an appreciated feature in tighter marinas.

Maritimo M50 aft deck

Boarding from the aft deck, the first impression is elegance. Genuine teak underfoot, neutral-toned fabrics, and warm wood accents instill richness. Throughout the yacht, abundant natural light and high headroom enhance the airy space. Clean lines and minimalist seating along the perimeter keep sightlines open, while large glass windows and doors provide 360-degree visibility. The result is an interior that feels expansive yet designed for easy living.

Spacious Interior and Entertaining Areas

The aft deck is designed for entertaining. A full-beam, aft-facing summer kitchen includes a grill, generous sink, and refrigeration, all positioned for easy service. An integral door opens to a substantial lazarette—large enough not only for access to mechanical systems and tankage, but also for storing bulky gear like fenders, water toys, and travel bags. Safety gates add security underway, and a deck shower offers a freshening rinse after a swim.

Opposite the gleaming white console, a long, upholstered bench and a sizable teak table invite alfresco dining. The hinged table flips to reveal additional access to the lazarette. Just forward, the engine-room hatch provides convenient entry to the generator, watermaker, and optional gyrostabilizer. Storage beneath the gunwales on both sides keeps lines and deck gear neatly tucked away.

A sliding glass door leads seamlessly into the galley, where the flush flooring—complete with drainage for any green water—is a reminder that this yacht is built for open-water cruising. The galley is stylish and efficient, with glossy varnished cabinetry housing a full complement of appliances: a vertical refrigerator, space-saving pull-out pantry, freezer/icemaker, drawer dishwasher, Miele microwave, convection oven, and cooktop. A backsplash at the sink subtly separates the galley from the salon, while a central island with a hidden trash bin doubles as food prep, serving area, or casual bar.

Up a step, the salon offers ample lounging with a retractable television and a fold-out sofa that converts into an additional berth—ideal for children or extra guests. This feature extends to the flybridge, effectively expanding sleeping capacity, so double your friends, family, and fun.

The Enclosed Flybridge Advantage

Maritimo’s signature fully enclosed flybridge is accessed via an interior salon staircase. Climate-controlled for comfort, the space can also open to sun and sky thanks to sturdy sliding side windows, a rear glass door, and overhead skylights—truly the best of both worlds.

The starboard helm is designed for the captain, featuring dual display screens, ergonomic controls, throttles, and a Volvo Penta joystick. The tall glass windshield with narrow supports provides excellent sightlines, and even the broader side pillars are angled to improve visibility. Electrically adjustable leather bucket seats lend an automotive feel, while guests can relax nearby on the portside lounge, keeping the skipper company underway. Molded cup holders on the helm’s edge add a convenient design touch.

Performance and Handling

Despite her size, the M50 feels smaller to operate than it feels visually. I was at ease, standing or sitting, running from Port Everglades toward Hillsboro Inlet in rolling seas. Maritimo’s offshore racing heritage is evident in the hull design, which incorporates a keel and reverse chines for stability and efficiency.

Power comes from twin Volvo Penta D13 800 engines, coupled with straight shaft drives and high-pressure fuel injection. The setup contributes to reduced noise and improved fuel efficiency, and with a fuel capacity of 925 gallons, the M50 offers a range of approximately 400 nautical miles at a comfortable cruising speed of around 24 knots. Push the throttles to 30 knots and she will take it with ease—no rattling or rocking.

Accommodations Below Deck

The flybridge accommodates guests with panoramic views. While the open aft deck is somewhat narrow, it allows space for a pair of sun loungers or beanbag chairs. A clear aft enclosure enhances visibility, and plexiglass wind wings deflect spray. A small wet bar or cooler would be a welcome addition.

Below deck, the accommodations continue the theme of thoughtful design and comfort. Wood and carpeted steps lead from the salon to the two staterooms, where natural light creates bright, airy spaces. Each cabin features an ensuite head with a glass-and-tile shower.

Full-beam master stateroom aboard the Maritimo M50

The forward VIP stateroom’s head doubles as a dayhead with a separate foyer entrance. Its angled bed can be configured as a double or split into twins, maximizing flexibility. Storage is well considered, with a hanging locker and additional space beneath and above the berths. Behind a foyer door, a washer/dryer adds a practical touch for extended cruising.

The full-beam master stateroom is a serene retreat. Generous headroom, large hull windows, portholes, and refined finishes extend to the spacious ensuite head with a wide sink, ample storage, and a separate shower, all with privacy shades. Envision unwinding or waking to ocean breezes and the scent of salt air.

The Maritimo M50 exudes richness, blending luxury and purposeful design. From its solid offshore performance to its refined interior wood, leather, and stainless-steel appointments, Maritimo offers a satisfying yachting experience for a day cruise, long weekend, or an extended destination journey—your choice.
