Women learned offshore fishing skills and gained hands-on experience at the Ladies, Let’s Go Fishing South Florida University, held April 17-19 in Fort Lauderdale.
Hands-On Fishing Training Builds Confidence
Designed for beginners and those looking to build confidence on the water, the “No Yelling School of Fishing” began with a Friday networking event at Custom Rod and Reel in Fort Lauderdale. The appetizer contest winner was Gail Hulme, of Fort Lauderdale, Floriad, for Crab Dip.
On Saturday, classroom presentations and hands-on skill stations were held at the Marine Industries Association of South Florida. Participants learned fishing skills from Capt. Lee Lavery, Capt. Jeanne Towne and Betty Bauman, then practiced knot tying, rigging ballyhoo, spin casting and net casting, while also learning offshore techniques.

Real-World Fishing Experience on the Water
On Sunday, participants applied their skills during an offshore fishing trip in calm sea conditions. The day provided valuable experience as participants practiced techniques and gained confidence on the water. Fishing on the Big Game out of Fishing Headquarters, Lisa Brewer, of Sarasota, Florida, released a large barracuda. Almaco jack and yelloweye snapper were caught. The ladies learned trolling, slow pitch jigging, how to use planers and more.
“Our goal is to make fishing approachable and enjoyable for women of all experience levels,” said Betty Bauman, founder of Ladies, Let’s Go Fishing. “This event featured one-on-one instruction, and it was exciting to see participants build skills and confidence throughout the weekend.”
