New controller integrates boat lighting and audio performance while simplifying installation and improving reliability

As RGBW lighting systems become a defining feature of modern boats, marine electronics manufacturers are working to ensure that advanced visual effects don’t compromise onboard entertainment. KICKER Marine Audio is addressing that balance with the introduction of the MSLC Marine RGBW Lighting Controller, designed to eliminate electrical interference that can disrupt high-performance marine audio systems.

You can learn more about KICKER and its Real Marine products at kicker.com/marine-audio and kicker.com/premium-marine.

Part of the brand’s expanding marine electronics ecosystem, the MSLC delivers centralized control of vessel lighting while maintaining clean, uninterrupted audio output across onboard sound systems.

Why LED Lighting Can Interfere With Marine Audio Systems

Modern vessels increasingly rely on high-output RGBW lighting to illuminate speakers, accent features and deck spaces. However, conventional lighting controllers often rely on low-frequency pulse-width modulation (PWM), which can generate electromagnetic interference that affects marine audio equipment.

This interference frequently presents as hum, crackle or signal distortion — a growing concern as both lighting and audio systems become more powerful and interconnected.

KICKER developed the MSLC (M-Series Lighting Controller) specifically to solve this issue. The controller uses high-frequency switching technology engineered to operate outside the audible range, allowing lighting and audio systems to function simultaneously without compromising sound quality.

“The quality of sound has always been a KICKER priority,” says Phil White, director of marine audio for KICKER. “The crackle and buzz that others tolerate simply doesn’t meet our standard. From the beginning, our founder Steve Irby set the bar at ‘music to your ears.’ The MSLC carries that philosophy forward by allowing modern lighting and premium sound to coexist without compromise.”

Features of the KICKER MSLC Marine RGBW Lighting Controller

The KICKER MSLC Marine RGBW Lighting Controller is designed as a centralized lighting control system capable of powering an entire boat’s RGBW lighting network from a single unit. The controller supports continuous output rated at 20 amps, or approximately 300 watts, allowing it to operate speaker lighting, accent lighting and accessory lighting systems simultaneously.

Centralized Lighting Control Across Multiple Zones

By delivering sufficient power density to support complete lighting systems, the MSLC eliminates the need for multiple controllers or external signal boosters. This streamlined approach reduces system complexity and can improve reliability, particularly in larger vessels with multi-zone lighting installations.

Plug-and-Play Connectivity Simplifies Installation

The controller incorporates DIN plug-and-play connectivity, consolidating multiple lighting circuits into one accessible service connection. This reduces wiring complexity and helps simplify installation for professional marine installers and experienced boat owners undertaking upgrades or custom builds.

Wired Marine Lighting Controls vs. Wireless Systems

While many modern lighting controllers rely on Bluetooth or smartphone-based controls, the MSLC utilizes a wired, dash-mounted rotary remote designed to provide immediate and consistent operation.

Users can easily cycle through lighting modes including music synchronization, flashing patterns, pulse effects, color-change sequences and static lighting selections. The controller includes 17 preset color options, allowing boaters to quickly adjust onboard lighting without relying on mobile devices or wireless connections.

Hardwired control systems can offer increased reliability in marine environments where wireless signals may be inconsistent or interrupted by vessel structure or environmental factors.

Marine Durability and Environmental Performance Standards

The MSLC is engineered to meet KICKER’s Real Marine durability standards, designed specifically for the harsh conditions experienced on the water. The controller is built to withstand vibration, moisture exposure, salt spray and ultraviolet radiation commonly encountered in marine environments.

KICKER applies extensive testing across its marine product line, including corrosion resistance testing in salt and fog environments, weather and UV exposure evaluations, and ingress protection testing to safeguard against debris and water intrusion.

The Growing Demand for Integrated Marine Audio and Lighting

The MSLC reflects a broader trend toward fully integrated onboard entertainment systems that combine lighting and sound into unified control platforms. As boat builders and owners increasingly prioritize immersive onboard experiences, centralized control systems help reduce installation complexity while improving overall performance and reliability.

Founded in 1973, KICKER initially built its reputation in automotive and powersports audio before expanding into the marine sector. Today, the company serves a broad range of boating categories, including pontoon boats, wake and surf boats, fishing vessels, cruisers and performance boats. Its marine lineup includes speakers, tower audio systems, subwoofers, amplifiers, receivers and integrated lighting solutions designed to meet marine durability standards.

By addressing the challenges of electrical interference and multi-system integration, the MSLC highlights the growing importance of cohesive audio and lighting technologies in modern marine design.
