Chris-Craft’s Pair of Aces

Chris-Craft’s elegant and sporty Capri 25 and Corsair 28 are a winning hand.

The elegant visage of a Chris-Craft gliding across calm waters reminds one of how the Kennedys vacation, where happy children trail the boat on skis or in a tube during the afternoon and later the entire clan enjoys a sunset cruise. The following day brings another outing on the boat to a white, sandy beach, where unfurled colorful umbrellas sway and the football is tossed playfully among the family. In the background, the dark blue Chris-Craft chariot is anchored. All seems right with the world.
Yes, the beauty of Chris-Craft boats has never been in question, and this year’s models place an emphasis on comfort and efficiency. These meticulous improvements make the passenger experience better than ever while also helping the boats run farther and faster due to a lightweight stringer system. The Sarasota, Florida-based builder showed off two Chris-Craft models that exude such characteristics at the 2016 Miami International Boat Show. The all-new Capri 25 made its U.S. debut and the revamped Corsair 28 was revealed.

Both the Capri 25 and Corsair 28 are symbolic of the evolution of Chris-Craft under Chairman Stephen Julius and CEO Stephen Heese. The two Harvard Business School classmates engineered the Chris-Craft resurgence in 2001 and continue to carry forward the momentum today.

The Capri 25 was introduced at the 2015 Cannes Yachting Festival and is the big sister to the Capri 21, which was launched at Cannes in 2013. The Capri 25 simply offers a little bit more of everything that was great about the 21, and that’s saying a lot.
“Similar to the Capri 21, the Capri 25 embraces the brand’s original DNA with the vertical bow,” says Austin Young, Chris-Craft product engineer. “That is the signature characteristic of this boat.”

The teak walkway theme carries over to the Capri 25, but is built into the port side of the sunpad, raising and lowering hydraulically to offer a true cockpit walkway. Retreating from the teak swim platform and into the cockpit is made easier with this innovation.
The cockpit offers many configurations for entertaining, as both the driver and co-pilot’s bucket seats swivel 360-degrees to face aft. There are also foldout tables in the cockpit for food preparation and serving, or you can use the counter space for card-playing and games. At the helm, the driver looks forward to a resplendent dash with analog gauges and throttle and shifter controls for the single MerCruiser 6.2-liter 300-hp engine. With the single powerplant and Bravo 3 drive, the Capri 25 has a top speed of 50 mph.

“We have gone to a fiberglass stringer construction system from a wooden stringer system,” adds Young. “The advantages are that you end up with a lighter boat that runs faster and a peace of mind that you never have to worry about the wood rotting out.”
The Capri 25’s cabin offers a head and berth for extra comfort, while other amenities are a three-step boarding ladder and Fusion stereo system, which are also offered on the Corsair 28. “As one of our best sellers, revamping the Corsair 28 was the natural next step,” explains Allison Scharnow, Chris-Craft’s marketing director. “With more luxurious touches than ever before, there is no doubt the Corsair 28 will continue to set unequalled standards for performance and design.” A huge teak swim platform off of the transom of the Corsair 28 leads to an even larger sunpad that covers the engine compartment. What’s interesting here is the design of the sunpad: it’s divided down the middle with a teak walkway into the cockpit. Fill in the walkway with a filler cushion and the sunpad stretches full beam–almost 10 feet wide.

“We carefully considered the way our owners use the boat and took it a step further,” Scharnow adds. “You’ll see an example of this particularly in the cockpit with improved room at the helm to accompany the double helm seat along with a new cockpit seating configuration.” Starting at the driver’s console, Chris-Craft’s engineers added more perforated plates, chrome and teak around analog gauges, creating a jeweled look for the dash. The excellent form meets with equally impressive function as the wood steering wheel and throttle and shifter assembly are well placed for the driver, who sits in an adjustable helm seat large enough for two. The console also provides plenty of space for a large multifunction display and other electronic elements.

The Corsair 28’s cockpit has been refined with a U-shaped couch that offers aft-facing recliners to port and starboard. Adjust the filler cushions and your entire body is supported comfortably to watch the passing shoreline. In the cabin, natural light pours in through a large skylight in the bow, and a queen bed in the V-berth allows two adults to get a restful sleep. Also below is a head located under the bed as well as a mirror and hanging locker.

The Corsair 28 offers a variety of engine options from Mercury and Volvo Penta in twin-engine packages ranging from 300-430 horsepower for each engine. “Using the fiberglass stringer system that is structurally bonded to the hull took out about 800 pounds,” says Young. “You gain about 10 horsepower for every 100 pounds, and we saw that benefit right away in our performance testing.”

On Chris-Craft boats, most models use paint for the exterior finish rather than gelcoat, resulting in more vibrant colors and increased durability. “If you look at our color spectrum customers can choose from, you can’t do it with gelcoat,” attests Young. “Every color we offer is bold and rich, and that requires paint. Regarding maintenance, you maintain it like you do car paint and we use very high-end paint with massive fade resistance. If you scuff it or scratch it, you can repair it just like a car paint job.”

Every summer at the Chris-Craft dealer meeting in Florida, the year’s feedback from loyal Chris-Craft owners is compiled, discussed and considered. According to Scharnow, product development remains at the forefront of the company, whether it’s introducing a new model or improving upon an existing model. “The Corsair 28 and Capri 25 are the perfect examples of how we continue to remain true to the Chris-Craft heritage while blending the latest innovations with Chris-Craft styling.”

Tiara 39 – Day Boat or Cruiser

Tiara 39 Coupe delivers the best of both worlds.

Elliott Key or simply cruising the ICW and stopping for lunch.” Issy Perera, president of Apex Marine in South Florida—and a Tiara Yachts dealer—knows precisely where Tiara’s new 39 Coupe is going to create a remarkable swagger among the growing number of dayboats that now congregate popular gathering spots on weekends. “Watch this,” he says as he pushes a button and the hydraulic swim platform lowers into the clear blue water of the Keys. “This is going to appeal to a wide scope of boaters, not just an aging population that finds ladders challenging.”

Yet the twin Volvo IPS 500 drives and 300-gallon diesel fuel capacity will just as easily conquer Key West, Havana Harbor and Marsh Harbour. “Cruising, especially with the price of fuel dropping, remains an important component for today’s boater,” acknowledges Tom Slikkers, president and CEO of S2 Yachts, Tiara’s parent company. “As we modernize our fleet with innovations, we’re more in tune with our customers’ changing lifestyles, and the Coupe series caters to dayboaters and cruisers alike.”

This is Tiara’s third Coupe following successive launches of their 50 and 44 Coupes that share a design trait styled around outdoor entertaining. A cockpit sole to hardtop sliding glass door glides open creating a seamless union between galley and salon inside, with an outdoor cockpit conducive to conversation, dining or simply enjoying the fresh air.

Across many boat lines, builders are “Swiss Army knifing” entertainment centers in cockpits, combining storage space, recessed grills, tackle drawers, and ice makers. Tiara’s vision is a designer’s dream. By positioning this feature of the Coupe series at the transom, a functioning focal point island was created, which serves as a luxurious forward-facing lounger, while the swim platform side includes a hidden grill, drawers and entrance to a cavernous storage trunk.

This island establishes two ways of egress, a definite advantage for singlehanded docking or boarding regardless of the marina’s finger pier configuration. The dual entry is also a winner with grill masters as they rush a plate of hot hamburgers or mouthwatering mahi-mahi from the innovation award-winning Kenyon All Seasons Electric Grill recessed in the aft island. This eliminates a congestion point yet keeps everyone close to the conversation.

An optional teak salon table with manual hi-lo pedestal bases easily stores between meals—storage is abundant in the Coupe series. IPS equipped boats opened spaces below decks that massive engine blocks once occupied. That room led to the enlargement of cabin space and in the Tiara 39 Coupe’s instance, a garage-like fiberglass liner accessed by a simply actuated one-piece door. Shore power cables, fenders, cleaning supplies, hoses, and fishing rods—there is room for it all—are out of sight, yet easily within reach.

Built for living outdoors, the salon delivers a yacht-like ambiance within the 13′ 3″ beam. The starboard galley features an Isotherm 120V/AC drawer unit—drawer refrigerator on top with lower drawer freezer, microwave/convection oven, and recessed two-burner electric cooktop. All appliances are neatly accented by Corian countertops and easily powered underway by the Onan 7.5kW generator. Portside, an L-lounge offers seating for four, with easy viewing of the 28″ LCD TV with Samsung Blu-Ray DVD player mounted above the galley.

Tiara has wisely chosen to sculpt a command center with the Volvo Glass Cockpit integrated electronics package with Volvo engine option. Twin Garmin 12″ displays allow for orchestration of every feature, sounder, radar, plotter, optional video cameras, all on presets that best serve you in the moment. While the 17.5-inch leather trimmed wheel offers a pleasing, reassuring tactile response, Volvo Joystick Plus Control with joystick driving may be the closing argument that sways the purchasing jury. Tiara’s sweet-riding hull delivers an exceptional driving experience, one that tempts you to turn hard to starboard as if cornering a roadster. Joystick control removes any navigation and docking hesitation.

Other notable design features include a manual sunroof and Duette blinds for port and starboard salon windows. The Fusion 3 zone sound system—with wired remote powered by JL Audio digital amp—blasts your favorite tunes from four speakers and Polk 8″ subwoofer with tuned enclosure. Bring your own playlist on board, as the unit accepts USB/MP3 and has integrated Bluetooth.

For weekends aboard or vacation adventures, below deck accommodations are inspirational. The master centerpiece is a queen-size pedestal berth with a deep quilted innerspring mattress. Storage is a cut above normal, with a cedar-backed hanging locker, a couple of upper storage compartments port and starboard, and significant space below the berth. Privacy is afforded with a bi-fold teak door.

An aft stateroom sports a full-size berth and a clever portside settee that can be used for additional sleeping capacity. For families, these sleeping arrangements are ideal, but owners who prefer separate sleeping accommodations will find the roominess of both staterooms more than adequate.

The single head between the master and aft stateroom is easy to access by day or night, and the over-the-counter mirrors and LED lighting create a sense of space. The shaped sink, single handle faucet and teak countertop over the lower vanity storage add a distinctive designer element to the head and shower.

Throughout the 39 Coupe are rich, solid wood flooring, decorative wall coverings, and heavy-duty hardware on latches that will stay closed in unsavory seas. Desirable options prospective owners should consider include a flat-screen TV and DVD player for the master stateroom, the elegant Sisal Seagrass aft cockpit carpet, and a well-engineered Makefast Marine powered sunshade that extends over the aft outdoor seating.

Tiara’s 39 Coupe eases the dilemma of choice between dayboat and cruiser, while giving a nod to changing lifestyle choices on the water.

Chris-Craft Catalina 34 Pilothouse

The new Chris-Craft Catalina 34 Pilothouse puts a premium on rugged performance and beautiful lines.

The metallic mahogany-red hull on the new Chris-Craft Catalina 34 Pilothouse catches my attention right away. It appears soft, like a favorite cashmere sweater, yet is buffed to such a high sheen that the sun’s reflection, though muted, is powerful. The captain welcomes me aboard and I quickly gather my wits.

“The hull is hand sanded at the factory with not six hundred-grit sandpaper, not one-thousand-grit, but up to five-thousand-grit sandpaper,” explains Gavan Hunt, sales director for Chris-Craft located in Sarasota, Florida. “The hull sides are dyed blue to spot any imperfections. Then the team goes over the boat with lights to find any blemish and fix it, and as you can see, the hull color is matched to the engines. The five-part paint process includes three levels of clear coat that virtually eliminates any possibility of fading.”

Hey, Good-lookin’

Good looks have always been paramount at Chris-Craft. The Catalina 34 has fit the bill since her launch three years ago. However, the Pilothouse version of the Catalina 34 made her debut at the 2017 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show with a design that provides more creature comforts to match its good looks. Not to be confused with a “raised pilothouse,” Chris-Craft’s modification of the center console design allows for enhanced protection from wind and weather. “The captain and guest can stay behind the uniquely integrated windshield out of the wind and spray but still connected to the outside,” Hunt says and adds that it’s only one of the great features that make it special.

Another special touch aboard the Chris-Craft Catalina 34 Pilothouse includes a cockpit door to starboard that allows easy access to and from the docks as well as from the water via a swim ladder that deploys from a hidden compartment. “Our customers want to pull up to the dock and step out, and a door that opens to the outside pushes you away from the dock,” Hunt says. “The door opens inward, which is an uncomplicated design that works great. Our customer is a very discerning buyer, and we feel like the Catalina 34 Pilothouse elevates itself above the fray.”

Chris-Craft offers a choice of Mercury or Yamaha outboard power. The Catalina 34 Pilothouse hull design responds well to a variety of horsepower options, and configurations include twin and triple 350-horsepower and triple 300-horsepower packages. Joystick control from Mercury’s Joystick Piloting, or Yamaha’s Helm Master or Optimus 360, provide the maneuverability and ease of operation today’s owners want. In addition, the Seakeeper 3 gyro stabilizing system is soon to be available as an option.

Perfect Combo

“The Chris-Craft Catalina 34 Pilothouse rides very dry on a conventional hull,” Hunt says. “The triple three-hundred horsepower engines push it to a top speed of more than sixty miles per hour. It’s got the right amount of Carolina flare, and you don’t have to worry about stuffing your nose in the following sea. It’s safe and comfortable, exactly the boat a Chris-Craft owner would expect. We’re not looking to set any speed records, but our hull is an amazing performer with a perfect combination of speed and handling attributes.”

Quality abounds aboard the Catalina 34 Pilothouse from the electro-polished stainless steel used throughout to the Sure Shade awnings. That’s not to mention the real teak decking on the swim platform aft of the cockpit. “Teak is nature’s nonskid flooring,” says Hunt. “Our teak vendor custom builds the teak pieces for us to exact specifications, and we use adhesive to create an inseparable bond to the boat. This teak is amazingly durable and will withstand the test of time. Teak can be misused and abused for years, but then we can sand it down and brought back to its original beauty. It is one reason why multi-million-dollar yachts have teak decks; looks luxurious and exudes quality and feels so good on your bare feet.”

Access to the cockpit from the aft swim platform is via a port-side boarding door in the transom. The cockpit features a transom bench seat and a drop-down seat in the port gunwale, creating a U-shaped lounge. Forward of the bench seat in the cockpit sole is a hatch that allows access to pumps, batteries, and a generator.

Chris-Craft uses the Mastervolt CZone digital control and monitoring network that incorporates the latest interfaces and lightweight NMEA 2000 network cable. Wiring is simplified as the CZone system replaces the complicated switching clusters and wiring runs.

“The CZone is really cool. It allows you to instantly access all switches for your stereo, fuel management, engine functions—everything right on the multifunction displays,” Hunt says. “Additionally, it also allows you to do switching from your wireless remote or smartphone. If you forget to turn off your batteries and you’ve already covered the boat, for example, you don’t have to shimmy under the cover. You can just switch them off remotely.”

All-Access

The helm features triple Pompanette bolsters facing an expansive dashboard. The dash features your choice of twin Garmin 12-inch or 16-inch multi-functional displays. The captain’s seat in the center is well positioned in relation to the steering wheel. Throttles and shifters are to the right on the dash along with the joystick. Atop the dashboard is a padded top with a compass in the center. “Access to the wiring and electronics for the dash is easy,” Hunt explains, showing how the top section of the dash console lifts on a hinge. “This allows you to get to the back of everything, and we label our wiring harness so you know exactly what’s going on.”

The Chris Craft Catalina 34 Pilothouse is built for a comfortable overnight trip. The cabin space below sleeps two adults comfortably. Air conditioning, a head, and mini-galley provide all the necessary comforts, while real wood accents offer unique styling.

Comfort Abounds

Moving forward to the bow, twin sunpad/reclining seats in front of the console offer the best spot for comfortable cruising. The seat pad lifts to reveal a deep locker. A U-shaped bench seat connects along the bow gunwales, and a teak bow platform at the peak provides access to the power windlass. The entire bow area also can convert into a huge sunpad with the option to cover it with a canopy. “I believe our customer is not going out on the water because he has to,” says Hunt.

“He’s going out because he wants to. Our customer is not typically focused on fishing, although he might go out and fish. We cater to a very elite clientele that appreciates excellence in every area of their life. They appreciate our painstaking attention to detail. Sometimes it’s a passion for the teak styling cues or amazing paint and finish quality, but in general, our owners are drawn to the Catalina’s beautiful form. It’s nautical art.”

I think Rembrandt would agree.

Let me be honest right from the start—I sea trialed the new Hatteras 45 Express Cruiser (45 EX) soon after it was launched, and I was also fortunate enough to view it from another boat as she ran at speed in the ocean. I studied the layout of the helm and cockpit, and, of course, I put my paws all over the interior—opened doors and drawers, and peered into nooks and crannies. My verdict? Hatteras has created a fun, easy to operate, great handling boat with the 45 EX.

Cruise with the family, drop a fishing line with the guys or gals, or just lie at anchor with your favorite book/movie/sunset view (you fill in the blank)—the 45 EX delivers and adapts. The large cockpit, for example, is a great place for the kids to play, accommodates a few lounge chairs for sunning, or suitably fits cocktail party guests with foldout side bench seating topped with padded coaming. Mezzanine seating adds a vantage point for watching the kids play in the water or spotting the next fish on. With armrests and cup holders, you may never move.

The built-in transom baitwell keeps the live ones swimming. Use it, instead, as a cooler filled with ice and bevvies or let the kids use it to store their day’s treasures—thanks to the well’s window they’ll have a field day watching the crabs or snappers they caught meandering about. Under the hardtop, the helm deck’s forward and side windows become part of the structure, with clear panels closing off the aft opening. Side vent windows and an overhead hatch let the breeze in, or opt for climate control with your air conditioning or heating system and boat all year round.

Hatteras designed the 45 EX with optimum visibility, which includes the single pane forward windshield. That’s right, it’s one piece of glass—a panoramic view with no mullions to get in the way—a much preferable setup to split windows. Expect the crowd to hang here, as there’s a large L-shaped settee along the aft side and to port, and has a lounger backrest. As witnessed by my portly frame taking a load off, the cushions are well padded and a very comfortable spot from which to enjoy a meal or cocktails on the double-posted table. A molded-in cabinet on the starboard side serves multiple functions. The forward end has a helm companion seat mounted on top—a high perch to see it all—while in the cabinet below is a fridge and freezer and air conditioning/heat vent. Further aft is a flip-up cover where the electric grill is located.

Standing at the elevated helm, there’s perfect vision fore and aft courtesy of the downslope of the forward deck and minimal bow rise during acceleration. Functionally, Hatteras worked the console and dash where they are not overbearing in size. With a pod-style helm, destroyer steering and Palm Beach single-lever shift controls, there’s room forward for the bank of switches to be housed in a plate, with names etched into the metal. CAT engine displays are installed here for easy viewing. Twin Garmin plotter/radar displays are mounted in the console, one directly in front and the other off to the left. Stereo, VHF, autopilot, and engine sync are mounted off to the left but easily within arm’s reach.

It’s easy to see the demographics that Hatteras is targeting with the 45 EX—an entry-level boat for newbies, couples and families inclusive, or doubles as a tender for large yachts. It also keeps Hatteras lovers in the brand as they downsize from larger sportfishers and motoryachts. The 45 EX is based on the former CABO 44 EX—a brand owned by Hatteras—and was produced side-by-side with the Hatteras yachts at their facility in New Bern, North Carolina. When the CABO line ceased production, Hatteras pulled the molds over and “Hatterized” the 44 EX by enhancing the model and injecting it with the Hatteras level of quality and support.

The 45 EX is powered by CAT C18s—good-sized engines sporting 1,150 horsepower each, which easily handled the chop as we took off from Port Everglades, Florida, for the high seas. (Offshore they were only really about two-footers). A burn rate of about 50 gallons an hour (combined total) at 1,500 RPM produced over 22 knots, but when we pushed the throttles up to 2100 RPM the 45 EX zoomed up to 37.5 knots drinking 95 gallons per hour. It’s good to know that if you need a little more go, there’s more to get. We pushed her to wide open and a speed of 40.7 knots. It’s an exhilaration that gets the blood flowing but with the confidence that the resin-infused solid fiberglass hull knows how to handle the rush. Back at the dock I checked out the engine room and although the access size of the entrance was fine—via a floor hatch just behind the helm seat—it was a bit cumbersome getting in and out around the seat. Thanks in part to owner feedback, I’m told they will be changing the location of the entrance, likely through the cockpit mezzanine.

Suitable for a day trip, weekend getaway or extended cruise, the 45 EX has full amenities below deck for comfortable living. Galley features include wood flooring, four Jenn-Air fridge/freezer drawers, Kenyon two-burner cooktop, KitchenAid microwave, Blanco sink and faucet, and quartz countertops. There’s storage under the dinette seating, and a large wood table. Forward is a stateroom with center berth, private head access and 32″ TV. An optional second stateroom can be fitted at the forward area of the dinette.

To entice the fishermen to this model, Hatteras has made the 45 Express Sportfish fitted with tuna tower, outriggers, cockpit fighting chair or leaning post, tackle center, and fish boxes. Built on the same hull configuration and engine packages, it will deliver the same results while maintaining the Hatteras quality.

It must have been a good decision by Hatteras to create the niche size, as they have sold a number of them since its debut, which is understandable. The size is right, the handling works, the accommodations are suitable, and it’s the kind of boat that keeps boating fun. Hatterasexpress.com

Monterey 360SC

Monterey 360 Sport Coupe

If you missed the Monterey 360 Sport Coupe at the 2014 Fort Lauderdale Show where it made its official debut, make sure you see it at your local dealer. Perhaps the most interesting design element on this 37’10”-long family cruiser is the patent-pending electronic windshield that slides open (70″) to allow passengers direct access to the foredeck from the cockpit. You can also slide the windshield open just a few inches to bring a gentle breeze into the cockpit. Designed by Monterey and Michael Peters Yacht Design, the 360SC boasts other cool features, including two electric helm chairs with flip-back bolsters that allow the couple at the driving station to turn and face guests in the cockpit when the hook is down. A great entertainer, the 360SC is offered with plenty of seating, a wetbar, an optional grill, home theater system and satellite-ready stereo. The cabin sleeps four in the V-berth and mid-cabin. montereyboats.com

Formula 330 CBR

Formula 330 Crossover Bow Rider

It’s one of the sweetest hybrid models to debut in 2015. The Formula 330 CBR (33′ LOA, 10’3″ beam) is one part day boat, one part overnight cruiser. This crossover model boasts open cockpit and bow areas that are as forward thinking as they are stylish. Lounges and seats, for instance, are convertible and make up into a variety of arrangements to suit the preferences of any group of guests. Seating is covered in fitted upholstery that’s top-notch, as it typically is on a Formula boat. The cabin, accessed through a door near the helm, has six feet of headroom, a lounge that converts to a queen-sized berth, a head with shower, plus an entertainment system. Whether you cruise for a few hours or into the night, driving the 330 should be a thrill. Twin Merc or Volvo engines power the 21-degree deep-V hull to deliver the exacting performance Formula owners have come to expect. formulaboats.com

Cobalt A40

People Pleaser

Sometimes the best place on a boat isn’t behind the wheel, but stretched out on a sunpad watching the world go by—and letting someone else pilot the vessel. The innovative layout and design of Cobalt Boats’ new A40 may sway more guests and even owners toward lounging rather than driving, as we discovered during our three-hour tour of the 40-foot sport yacht at the 2014 Miami International Boat Show in February.

Here’s why it’s awfully tempting to let someone else be in control: a huge aft island sunpad that has a split backrest that moves fore and aft. Move the backrest all the way aft and you’ve got a conventional front-facing lounge with a sunpad; move it all the forward and you’ve got a backrest for the sunpad, ideal for reclining in comfort. This setup is just one of many interesting features Cobalt has built into the A40, which is new for 2014. The boat we reviewed was hull No. 2, and Cobalt is in full production on the A40 and delivering boats to customers.

While relaxing and lounging is a big draw, the A40 also offers a first-class experience for the driver, utilizing Volvo Penta’s new Glass Cockpit navigation system (see Engine Room in the April 2014 issue of Southern Boating). Powered by a pair of Volvo Penta D6 diesel, 5.8-liter, 400-horsepower engines mated to stern drives with joystick control, the A40 has twin 12-inch Garmin Glass Cockpit 8212 multi-function displays mounted side by side on the dash. “It’s easy to use and takes hardly any time to get used to,” says Alex Barry, Cobalt’s western regional manager. “Once you learn to use it and become aware of all the functions you have, it’s going to be second nature and something you are lost without.”

Another appreciated feature is the joystick control, which allows for excellent low-speed maneuvering. The A40 does not have a bowthruster, but even in tight docking situations the joystick allows for precise steering with just a slight twist or push. Volvo Penta’s fly-by-wire software commands—from the joystick control—the individual stern drives with just the right throttle and thrust to move the boat into the helmsman’s desired position.

The helm features a bolster arrangement that can be configured for comfortable sitting or standing, with a well-positioned steering wheel and Volvo Penta throttles and shifters in a good position. Stainless-steel accessory switches are in a row below the twin Garmin multi-function displays, and the pop-up switch lights up when you turn them on. Detailed piping and stitching on the fabric and teak accents in the deck are elegant touches, and the entire helm area can be closed off with Strataglass. The hard top offers plenty of sun protection and also has space for optional radar and entertainment/communication antennas.

The A40 is the latest flagship of the fleet built at Cobalt’s manufacturing plant in Neodesha, Kansas, and the newest in the builder’s A Series, which also includes the A25 and A28. With a dry weight of just under 20,000 pounds, it’s a capable cruiser built with an extended running surface to withstand rough sea conditions. The A40’s ride is complemented by Lenco trim tabs that work in concert with an auto-leveling system you can set via the Glass Cockpit. The auto-leveling system uses an onboard gyro to stabilize the boat, providing an extremely smooth ride.

“This runs beautifully with the Volvo Penta stern drive engines,” says Barry, who notes that buyers can also choose optional Mercury and Volvo Penta power plants. “The boat will run to 47 mph at 3600 rpm, and then you can throttle back to a nice cruise at 30 mph at 2000 rpm. At that speed it gets about 1.5 miles per gallon, so you could run out to Bimini from Miami and have plenty of fuel left over. The boat is built for cruising and day boating.”

Cobalt designed the A40 for day boating, but there’s room for living aboard with generous headroom down below and berths for four people. The forward cabin features a V-berth that offers dual functionality: first, with twin facing settees and center table, and second, as a berth with a table that drops down and a filler cushion inserted to make a double berth. Air conditioning keeps it cool and a center skylight/hatch lets in plenty of natural light. To port is a galley with freshwater sink, refrigerator and freezer, and above that are the boat’s voltage-sensitive relay (VSR) panel—which determines what batteries need to be charged—and controls for the Sirius audio system.

The dedicated two-person berth under the helm area to starboard comes complete with a flat-screen television. A well-appointed head is nicely designed and offers plenty of room, and features a VacuFlush toilet with macerator, shower and elegant vessel-style sink.

Stepping up into the saloon/helm area, a comfortable L-shaped settee is to port while the two-person helm is to starboard. Aft of the helm seat is the outdoor galley, which features another freshwater sink and outdoor barbecue that can be closed off with a fiberglass lid that raises and lowers on hydraulic rams. In the down position the lid offers generous counter space for serving and preparing food.

In the center aft is the island sunpad, the front of which rises up on hydraulic rams to reveal the engine room, and access to the Kohler 6.0-kW diesel generator and twin Volvo Penta power plants. The aft end of the huge sunpad opens to reveal two large storage lockers with room for lifejackets and other gear.

Aft of the sunpad is the smartly designed transom floor and swim platform. The swim platform can be lowered with the push of a button from an above-waterline position to two feet below the surface, making it extremely easy to reboard from the water. A freshwater hot-and-cold shower is also well positioned, and twin audio speakers deliver the tunes.

“This has a 12-foot beam but most people think it’s at least 14 feet wide,” Barry says. “We had 13 people on here the other day and there was plenty of space for everyone, and the boat performed as if I was aboard alone. Everyone was able to find a spot to relax and enjoy the day. Enjoyment is what this boat is intended for—a social gathering place for people on the water.”
