Boat Builder Stephen Dougherty

Building a better boat takes experience and fine skills, but it’s a passion for the industry that will set it apart.

Stephen Dougherty doesn’t take things lying down, unless he’s inspecting in great detail the hull mold for his new SOLACE 345 center console. The first model in a new line of boats in the 30-foot range, the design is a culmination of a lifelong passion for boatbuilding.

SOLACE isn’t a name that came out of distress or sadness, it’s a testament to finding comfort in your strengths and abilities learned throughout a lifetime. “When I was a kid, the thirteen-foot Boston Whaler was a stand-up console for me. That’s when I started driving a boat,” says Dougherty. “I would go out with my dad up in Massachusetts, and we would test boats in the middle of the winter when I was seven years old. That was a regular thing for me. That was normal. We’d break ice at the launching ramp, put the boat in and go out and test it.”

Runs in the Family

His father, Bob Dougherty, a former senior vice president and chief engineer for Boston Whaler, was a positive and meaningful influence. “I would go to boat shows, I would go to Boston Whaler on Saturdays and go to the pattern shop and work with the guys on the floor,” he recalls. He built things. It was his way of life and didn’t think anything different.

The “Dougherty Difference” was strengthening. His dad was instrumental in the design and techniques that created Boston Whaler’s innovative hulls in the 1960s. He refined Dick Fisher’s and C. Raymond Hunt’s unibond construction technique of the famed unsinkable boats. He was a creator, a teacher, a builder and did things the best way possible without cutting corners. He treated his fellow workers like family which nurtured his son’s progression into the industry.

At 19, after years of “playing” in the shop and honing his manufacturing skills, Stephen Dougherty joined his father at Boston Whaler. The Dougherty Difference of cutting-edge designs, original ideas, and a strong commitment to the customer and family was set.

A teachable moment during hull construction.

“I grew up in a boat factory building boats. I knew I wanted to do that since I was very young,” says Dougherty. “It was in my dad’s blood for years as well and when he was young, he wanted to build boats. He was a schoolteacher first and was teaching industrial arts and lots of different things, but he wasn’t making enough money, so he ended up going into building boats.”

Movin’ On Up

Times in Massachusetts were tough for manufacturing companies and Boston Whaler had to relocate. “My father had to find a new home and found a plant in Edgewater, Florida, that was manufacturing lifeboats,” recalls Dougherty. “Schat Watercraft was on the water. They moved in, built an addition and moved the entire facility down. My job coming to Florida was to set up and train people how to assemble every Boston Whaler. I and about six other guys opened the Boston Whaler facility.”

Teaching local fishermen and farmers how to build boats was a big job for several years.  Boston Whaler went through a few owner transitions after the move that restricted new development which led Dougherty and his dad to start a new company.

Dougherty Marine along with RJ Dougherty and Associates conceived and manufactured a new design for boat windshields, and Dougherty expanded his interest in learning how to work with and create parts from Starboard, a new marine-grade polymer product that is resistant to saltwater, UV, chemicals, sunshine, and corrosion. Around that time, his dad said, “We’re going to build a boat.”

On the Edge

Dougherty had never gone through the entire process of building a wooden pattern, lofting and full-size molds, so he learned. “We built a boat, and that eventually became
EdgeWater Powerboats,” he explains. “We built that company up to 100 or so people with eight models.” They took on some partners, who were sailboaters, and ended up selling their stock to them and moved on to start Everglades Boats.

“We built up Everglades pretty quickly,” says Dougherty. “A brand new hundred and twenty-five thousand-square-foot facility and it was a very efficient, a great company.” At Everglades, the team was able to design and build what they wanted and incorporated his dad’s Rapid Molded Core Assembly Process, which won a Marine Manufacturers Innovation Award in 1999, into every hull.

The family decided to cash out of Everglades in 2012, and Dougherty suddenly found himself with nothing to do. “My passion is building boats, and I earned a living out of building boats,” he says. Like his father, Stephen Dougherty wanted to build a great company for his family “…so my kids could stay around here in Florida and work for the company and stay together. That’s been my life’s dream.”

Building the Dream

His dream started with the purchase of a 30,000-square-foot facility. Dougherty started building things again and within a year, outgrew the complex. The City of Everglades
convinced him to buy a 200,000-square-foot building that was empty and run-down knowing he’d do something with it and put people to work. “When we bought the facility and were headed into the direction of manufacturing, our goal, in the end, was to be in the boat business,” says Dougherty.

There was a no-compete clause for three years after leaving Everglades, so instead of building boats, he worked on various large-scale fabrication projects, including those for numerous theme parks. One such project involved receiving only the concept and artist renderings, so Dougherty had 10 engineers work on the design and then the company manufactured the build. “Our capabilities are very diverse as a result of doing all that work for other companies,” says Dougherty, which greatly improved his team’s skills.

Finally able to build his innovative center console design, Dougherty got SOLACE in gear. “We knew we wanted to do everything in-house,” says Dougherty. “We already had an engineering team and a facility, so we bought two five-axis routers; one of them is capable of building a boat sixty feet long and the other is for small parts.” The SOLACE facility includes a welding fabrication shop, a brand-new, state-of-the-art Haas machine shop, paint facility, and a very modern lamination facility—a full-blown boatbuilding operation where the family heritage continues and his son now “plays” in the metal fabrication shop.

The SOLACE 345 is the culmination of his life’s work in engineering, building boats, turning ideas into practical designs, and trusting his instincts. “As far as building a boater’s boat, that’s what I do, and that’s what my dad has always done,” says  Dougherty. “My wife and I and the kids go out on the boat every weekend. We’re boaters… That’s how I look at things differently than other boatbuilders look at things. People build ski boats, and people build fishing boats, and people build flats boats and pleasure boats. I build a boat for boaters…They go to the fireworks, they go to the picnic, they go to the beach, they go fishing, they go waterskiing, they do everything with a  boat.

The Lesson

“My dad taught me a long time ago that there are two ways you can go when building, designing and selling a boat,” says Dougherty. “You can build an okay boat and do a load
of marketing, or, and this is how my dad put it, ‘you build a badass boat and people are going to buy it.’ Our philosophy is about building a better boat. In order to do that, you need to make every single aspect of the boat better.”

The Best Memories

The best memories are made on the water.

But I don’t have to tell you that. Whether it’s fishing with kids, cruising on a family vacation or a grandkid cruise, we all know the best memories are made on the boat.

A recent National Marine Manufacturers Association survey revealed that nearly 8 out of 10 adults who boated last year had also done so as children. The report also found that those who enjoyed the lifestyle as children were more likely to do so as adults. This makes complete sense: if you grow up around boating, you are more likely to boat later in life.

When I was growing up, boating was ingrained into my life. I was fortunate to live in a place where it was almost a given that you would spend time on a boat. But now, I realize that while I love being on boats, I’m not ready to be a boat owner. Let me rephrase that: I’m not ready to be a boat owner YET. And I think a lot of people find themselves in a similar situation, for a host of reasons.

If you’re between boats or not sure if ownership is a good current fit, you can still stay active on the water. Options include renting, sharing or joining a boat club. You can also enter into a shared ownership with family or friends. Or an inexpensive option like a dinghy, small sailboat or aluminum boat. I, for one, like the rental option. I’ve occasionally used Boatsetter (like Airbnb for boats) for special events and holidays.

But really, the most important thing is to pass along the love of boating on to family and friends. I hope to be a proud boat owner someday. Of course, that’s once my credit cards, student loans, mortgage, car loan, and home improvements are completely paid off. I’m just not there yet. I feel like I have an obligation to pass on the love of boating onto others. We all do. It comes from those who passed it on to me.

Fishing with Kids

When you go fishing with kids, there’s more to it than grabbing the tackle box, rod, and reel.

Selma Radoncic grinned from ear to ear as she gently stroked the dorsal fin of a fat bluegill before we carefully released it back into the water. At the tender age of five, she was out fishing and loved every second of it. Only minutes earlier, Selma had caught her first fish, a six-inch largemouth bass, and celebrated with high-fives all around.

Now, she was on her fourth fish and would go on to deck some 20 more. It was a carefully orchestrated morning trip that saw us leave the fish biting. Even before we returned to the dock, it was apparent the young angler would be forever hooked. There was little doubt that her dad, Emir Radoncic, and grandfather, John Kurtz, would have a new fishing partner for life.

Industry surveys show that most anglers get their start in fishing as youngsters. In fact, studies reveal that very few people pick up the sport as adults. Thus, those first few trips fishing with kids need to be fun and successful if your child is ever going to see fishing as a favorite pastime. Unfortunately, indoctrination into the fishing world for many youngsters consists of a spur-of-the-moment trip with the minimal preparation. That may end in boredom or even frustration for both child and adult. That’s a shame because all it takes is a little insightful planning and success can be assured, even if the fish don’t bite.

Short Trips and Fast Action

One key point to remember is that kids have limited and varied attention spans. Thus, it’s generally best to keep first trips brief. One hour of fishing can offer enough fun for most kids. Two or three hours is plenty even if the fish are hungry. Remember that, to children (and most adults), the day’s last impression is often more important than the first. For example, an hour of good fishing followed by three hours of waiting for one last bite can undo a productive start. Quit while you’re ahead and your kids will beg for more.

It’s also important to realize that children need action and success when they go fishing. Although the promise of catching a big one may provide a grown-up challenge, it pales in comparison to the reality of a small fish actually tugging at the end of the line. Tuna and six-year-olds don’t mix very well, but a day spent catching scup or perch can be delightful.

In general, it’s a good idea to avoid large, overpowering or elusive species like cow stripers, large drum, tackle-busting blues, wary bonefish, or finicky trout. Instead, key on small, fast-biting and abundant quarry; you can always increase the challenge on subsequent trips. For the novice angler, summer flounder, croaker, porgies, snapper, grunt, catfish, perch, and panfish are ideal targets, as are many so-called “trash fish.”

Take sea robins, for example. These oft-maligned scavengers are perfect for getting kids started. While adults tend to consider them little more than bait-stealing pests, sea robins are really neat from a kid’s perspective. They are abundant and colorful, feed with abandon, have wing-like fins, make loud croaking sounds, sport a gaping, toothless mouth, and strike both lures and bait. They also fight hard. Fry ‘em up and they taste enough like summer flounder that few will know the difference. Call them “dragon fish” and they suddenly take on a mysterious aura. Just watch out for the spines that surround their head when you’re fishing with kids.

As a youngster, I loved to catch sea robins. I also fished with abandon for bluegill, perch, bergalls, and porgies (scup). I spent countless hours at a local tidal creek enticing spearing and killies (mumichugs) to bite on tiny beads of Wonder Bread. I’ll let you in on a little secret: Learn to hook a dainty minnow and you can catch anything that swims.

Homework is Key

Time is precious, but an investment in scouting goes a long way when it comes to scoring a successful first fishing outing. Before you bring the kids along, head out and make sure the fish are actually biting. Are the fish where you expect? Can you actually catch one? If not, do a little more prospecting before your protégé joins you.

As for fishing instruction, give a hands-on demonstration. Most kids can figure out how to cast and retrieve any basic fishing setup in about 15 minutes. Provide casting demonstrations and practice at the dock or in the yard before heading out. Learning to cast while the fish are jumping can be especially exasperating. With younger kids, grown-ups should bait the hook and unhook the catch for obvious reasons. Appropriate flotation devices should always be mandatory. Lay down the safety ground rules ahead of time. “Look before you cast”  should especially be reinforced before allowing any fishing to commence.

As for actual tackle, start out with light gear that kids can handle and balance with ease. But choose a sturdier rod and reel over the inexpensive kid’s push-button spin-cast set-up commonly found in big box stores. As a rule, these cast poorly and don’t hold up well, which can lead to more disappointment than joy. Besides, you’ll be amazed at how quickly kids pick up the mechanics needed to use more grown-up gear if the fish start to bite.

Catch, Release and Have Fun

Fishing trips provide a great opportunity to introduce the topics of conservation and outdoors ethics to children. Long before anyone places a bait in the water, explain that some of the smaller fish will be released and discuss the techniques for letting fish go.

Of course, no matter how much you plan, there are going to be days when the fish just refuse to bite. If that happens, it’s okay to admit defeat. Fish for a bit, then switch gears and try some other fun activity. Rather than end the trip on a sour note, sample a little shellfishing, go crabbing, catch frogs or crayfish. You could fly a kite, collect driftwood and seashells, skip stones, explore a cove, swim in the shallows, have a picnic, or play tag on the beach. It’s all good, and associating these fun activities with going fishing is always a smart move.

To be certain, you really want to catch something on that first outing. But failing to score doesn’t doom the day. Most youngsters are simply happy to be out on the water spending time with you. Realize this one simple fact, and you’ll understand what many adults have forgotten but most kids already know: Catching fish is just a bonus.

Cruising with Grandparents is the best gift of all

Grandparents discover the best Christmas gift
gives memories that last a lifetime.

With Christmas just around the corner, most grandparents’ thoughts happily turn to family gatherings, parties and presents piled under the Christmas tree. Topping the gift list are the grandchildren and what to buy for them. As they grew older, it became increasingly challenging to sort through all the commercialization and “stuff” clogging store shelves and littering the Internet. Do they really need another electronic device, game, doll, or cute dress? Is there such a gift we can give our grandchildren that is meaningful and will stand the test of time, is for all ages and limited only by one’s imagination, and keeps on giving?

Those were the questions we asked ourselves eight years ago and also posed to several of our friends and fellow yacht club members. We suggested that, instead of giving meaningless games or toys that end up in the back of our grandchildren’s closets, we organize a group cruising itinerary exclusively for and with our grandchildren. There would be only one rule: no parents allowed. The idea was a hit, the “Grandkid Cruise” was launched the next summer after the end of the school term and it’s been going on ever since.

Like swallows to Capistrano, the grandkids fly in from Atlanta, San Francisco, Hampton Bays, Roxbury, and Memphis. Casting off from our respective docks in Stuart, Florida, the “Grandkid Cruise” heads to open waters for a two-week summer adventure. The itinerary includes many ports of call from which to choose: Fort Lauderdale, Coconut Grove, Miami Beach, the Florida Keys, and The Bahamas. After selecting a destination, we collectively plan throughout the year tailoring our cruise to provide entertainment, education, new skills, and a good dose of social and mannerly instructions. (One of the most important duties of grandparents, after all, is to aid in the civilization of their grandchildren since parents aren’t always consistent in this department.) The cruise offers an opportunity to form stronger bonds away from home turf where parental input can confuse and aggravate familial dynamics. Our boats—Check Six, Cats in the Hatt, Final Approach, Tartan, and Mad Hatter—provide a neutral zone where mom and dad’s input is off the grid.

The number of participating boats is limited because of scarce marina space and restaurant capacity. Many restaurants cannot handle a group of approximately 15 people, especially in The Bahamas. Restaurants are an important component of these cruises as the stage for reinforcing table manners and social skills—how to properly sit at the table, napkins in lap, no running around, and absolutely no chewing with mouths open. Cell phones are strictly prohibited, allowing for the flow of conversation in uninterrupted rhythms.

The favorite destination of all is Old Bahama Bay at West End, a small marina that most boats stop over when crossing the Gulf Stream from Florida before pressing on to other ports. It is especially wellappointed for water sports, beach and sun. All day the kids jump in the pool, race to the beach, paddleboard, sail, snorkel, and jump back in the pool again. They never tire of this itinerary. In the evening, we gather at a host boat for cocktails and dinner, then visit with the other cruisers lining the docks, exchanging pleasantries and sometimes running into them again at another port. It’s a small but very friendly world among cruisers.

In the early cruise years, the grandkids’ ages ranged from 5 to 12. Amazingly, they all got along with the eldest watching out for the youngest and organizing the flow of activities from docks to beaches. They became a mob of laughing, sun-kissed children.

One of our first destinations was Bimini Bay where we anchored up in Honeymoon Hole and taught the kids to snorkel. The fish were numerous and bold brushing against their legs, with screams of surprise and delight erupting from the girls. There was a nearby sunken wreck calling for exploration. And there was always a visit to the Hemingway Bar to tell about Ernest Hemingway and his love of fishing and the islands. I bought The Old Man and the Sea for my girls that summer.

We let them drive our boats and explain how the instruments and gauges work. When the weather turns foul, there are lessons on that as well. They learn how to throw lines—not ropes—to the dockhands and about following seas and currents. We instill a healthy respect for the ocean and its capabilities—delightful one day and unforgiving the next. After the cruise, I download all the pictures and professionally print a glossy memory album capturing their favorite moments and poses.

Our grandkids are older now, and they’re moving on to college and life’s challenges. Our small fleet has winnowed and we know the end of the “Grandkid Cruise” is not far off, but we don’t despair. We know that we have fulfilled our roles and helped to instill knowledge and an awareness of the world around them. Best of all, we have cemented the strongest of bonds and the creation of wonderful memories that will last all of our lives.
