The Inflation Indicators – the CPI and PPI.
This past week both indicators were released. The analysts and the “market” had less trepidation given that the most recent few months have seen a significant decrease in both Consumer Price Index as well as the Producer Price Index (the latter being more about finished goods).
SURPRISE!
Both numbers came in hotter than expected.
Let’s begin with the most recent release on Thursday of the Producer Price Index (PPI). This was expected to come in at 0.5% and year over year at 5.9%. The numbers, however, came in higher at 0.7% and 6.0% YoY. This was a surprise to economists and to the market.
Last Tuesday (Valentine’s Day), the CPI was expected to come in at 0.4% for the month of January and 6.3% YoY. Instead, the number for January 2023 came in at 0.5% and 6.4% for 12 months (YoY). Food and energy also remained elevated.
Both the PPI and CPI numbers are not dropping as much as people had expected. AND THIS IS AFTER THE GOVERNMENT has been hard at work massaging the way the monthly numbers are calculated. See the chart below:
Folks, with all candor, there are two realities that one must understand.
They are calculating the number using new methods. In truth, the rate of inflation is probably well over 8% and;
These past 12-month numbers are ON TOP of a previous twelve-month number of greater than 8%. So in reality, we have seen at least 15%-20% inflation over the past 2+ years. THAT IS WHY EVERYTHING SEEMS SO EXPENSIVE. Food costs have likely tripled from pre-pandemic levels.
To get a better idea of how each input is contributing to the overall rate of inflation, one must look under the hood. You will notice that the two highest contributors and several in the top 10 list are all food related. See the chart below:

Break out the sunblock and the flip-flops as the marine industry heads to Florida’s notorious South Beach for the 2023 Discover Boating Miami International Boat Show, February 15-19. The National Marine Manufacturers Association owns the show, and it’s produced by Informa Markets.

The latest addition to Valhalla’s V Series is the flagship model Valhalla V-55 that can be used for long-distance cruising or for tournament-level fishing. The Valhalla V-55 (55’ 7” LOA, 15’ 6” beam) is the largest center console to utilize the double-stepped running surface from Michael Peters Yacht Design. The center console is available with either five or six Mercury 600 V12 Verados and thanks to a 1,200-gallon fuel tank it can run deep offshore. Galeon Yachts will introduce the 440 FLY and 560 FLY motoryachts at the Miami show. Galeon took a fresh approach to the onboard space for the 440 FLY (45’ 9” LOA, 13’ 9” beam). The boat can be configured for either two or three cabins, and Galeon offers a variety of finishes and features for customization. Standard power is twin Volvo Penta D6-480 engines for a cruising speed of 25 knots. The 560 FLY (57’ 7” LOA, 15’ 10” beam) has massive windows on the main deck to create a futuristic design. Twin Volvo Penta D13-900 engines provide 1,800 horsepower to deliver a top speed of 30 knots. For the all-new Aquila 42 Yacht Power Catamaran, the Chinese builder turned to renown designer VPLP Design for the new model. The 42 Yacht (41’ 6” LOA, 21’ beam) is CE certified and features two staterooms (available in multiple configurations) with individual heads. The catamaran offers a spacious foredeck and the expansive flybridge is accessible from stairs in the bow. The all-new 41 Valor from Intrepid Powerboats features a wider beam and transom on a newly designed hull. The larger cockpit’s transom door opens to a spacious swim platform. Pursuit Boats will introduce the OS 445 Offshore, the largest boat it has ever built. The OS 445 (46” 6” LOA, 13’ 10” beam) is the flagship of the Offshore series and maximizes the liveaboard yachting experience. With plenty of room, the Pursuit can be used from fishing and cruising to dining and relaxing. Built for overnighting, the model includes two staterooms, a galley-up design, and an innovative bridge deck. Pursuit will also introduce the S 248 Sport (25’ 8” LOA, 8’ 6” beam), a center console loaded with features ideal for fishing or entertaining. Australia’s Riviera filled out its Sports Motor Yacht line with the launch of the new 46 Sports Motor Yacht (52’ 2” LOA, 15’ 7” beam), the fifth and smallest in the series that goes up to 72 feet. The yacht offers similar amenities to its larger siblings, including multiple entertaining spaces that stretch from the boarding platform to foredeck sun lounges and an open flybridge for eight guests. A covered alfresco deck forward of the cockpit expands the salon living space. A sliding glass door and large awning window connects guests with the galley immediately forward. The luxurious Mystic Powerboats’ M5200 perfectly pairs speed and elegance to create a smooth riding, on-water experience. The M5200 (52’ LOA, 14’ beam) is powered by four Mercury Marine 600-hp V12 Verado outboards and able to reach speeds of 80 mph. South African custom sail and power catamaran builder Two Oceans Marine Manufacturing is debuting the all-new 555 power catamaran in Miami. Designed by DuToit Yacht Design, the 555 (55’ 6” LOA, 25’ beam) features fully painted hull and deck surfaces, high bridge-deck clearance for handling elevated sea states, proprietary performance-oriented hull design, and tunnels with sacrificial keels designed by Teignbridge LTD for a draft of 3-1/2 feet. Powered by a pair of Cummins 6.7l 550-hp diesels, the 555 has a top speed of 26.8 knots. Drawing from the popular LS Series and Coupe models, Tiara Yachts launched its adventure-inspired EX 60 (60’ 3’’ LOA, 16’ 11’’ beam). Design teams wanted to maximize exterior enjoyment while still providing the comforts and amenities needed for extended stays. Four different cockpit modules are available focused on cruising, entertaining, or water sports. Tiara Yachts partnered with Volvo Penta for power on the EX 60, which includes twin D13-IPS 1350 engines paired with Electronic Vessel Control, Interceptor Trim System with Active Ride Control.
