Top Catamarans for Cruising: Powercat Roundup

Top Catamarans for Cruising

Powercats offer stability, spaciousness, beautiful lines, and so much more. See some of the industry’s top catamarans for cruising.

The multi-hull catamaran design has centuries-old roots in seafaring cultures around the world— think outrigger canoes in the South Pacific. As engine technology evolved, applying power to sailing catamarans was a natural progression. Today, powercats range from 28-foot fishing boats to 70-foot luxury yachts that come equipped with sought-after mono-hull features like generous interior appointments, advanced electronics, and equipment that ensures ease of use. These days, the top catamarans for cruising are wide and varied.

Bareboat charter companies, such as The Moorings and MarineMax Vacations, use powercats for their fleets, where customers charter and pilot the boats themselves. (Allowing charter customers to pilot vessels unaided says a lot about how well powercats perform.) And once you take a tour of the luxury powercats, you will be amazed at the size; the sprawling interiors seem more like apartments than boats.

Here’s a look at some of the leading powercats and the top catamarans for cruising from top builders worldwide. Anglers will recognize some that are ideal for fishing, while cruisers will spot those designed for relaxation and luxury. Whatever your reason for looking at powercats, you’ll agree that two hulls just might be better than one.

World Cat 280DC-X

The launch of the World Cat 280DC-X center console (27’6″ LOA, 9’2″ beam) changes the traditional monohull yacht owner’s perception of how a catamaran looks and performs. The 280DC-X is evidence of a more modern approach while highlighting the advantages of owning and operating a cat. A revolutionary new feature with the 280DC-X is an innovative, frameless glass windshield that World Cat engineered to create a seamless viewing experience and maximized visibility.

Adding sophistication to the overall deck layout, the World Cat 280DC-Xmodel showcases a fiberglass top with surfboard-edge and powder-coated frame and an ergonomically designed console with a stitched, matte vinyl top for better visibility in bright light. The fiberglass-lined head runs deeper than most heads in a boat this size, and deluxe bow seating accommodates six adults. Abundant storage includes a step-in closet in the starboard bow with room for scuba tanks and more.

The cockpit showcases a double-wide seat that converts from a front to the rear-facing arrangement, and a walk-through transom with a latched door provides safe, easy access to the On-Ramp swim platform/ ladder. Powered by twin Yamaha 200-hp outboard engines, the boat runs to a top speed of 49 mph.

Aspen C120 Power Catamaran

The Aspen C120 Power Catamaran (42’6″ LOA, 13’10” beam) runs on a revolutionary new patented hull design. The two hulls, while identical in profile, are different with one being 35 percent thinner. These non-symmetrical hulls are shaped to compensate for the offset thrust and torque of its one engine, and since both forces are proportional to speed and thrust, the boat runs straight and appendage drag is reduced by 20 percent.

Powered by a Volvo Penta 330-hp engine, the Aspen C120 runs to 23 knots and cruises 350 miles at 16 knots. The upper deck offers sunpads and full helm control, and the salon has an open layout providing views from every seat. Each hull has a head with shower. To starboard is a queen stateroom complete with hanging locker, portlights, and reading lights, and to port is a twin cabin suitable for kids or crew. The full-width, king master stateroom is forward and includes port and starboard hanging lockers, drawer sets, and a starboard vanity.
