Tiny, but also potentially menacing, New Zealand mudsnails are now flourishing in the Gunpowder River, a northwest tributary of Chesapeake Bay. The Department of Natural Resources has confirmed the first known presence of the non-native mollusk in Maryland
waters. While the potential ecological impact of the mudsnails invasion remains uncertain, biologists believe the species could displace both native snails and aquatic insects that other native species, like fish, depend on.
In an effort to prevent the spread of the mudsnail, the department is requesting that anyone who comes into contact with the river takes the time to decontaminate their gear. This includes boots, buckets, fishing rods, oars, and boats (motor and trailer).
