DIY summer maintenance tips for your boat lift
Summer is here, and with it comes long weekends, warm breezes, and more time on the water. For boating families, the start of summer is the busiest time of year—and it’s also the most important time to make sure your equipment is in top shape. Before you kick off the season, take some time to make sure your boat lift is ready to support your adventures safely and reliably. Here’s how to make sure your lift is summer-ready.
Freshwater Maintenance
While freshwater is generally less corrosive than saltwater, it doesn’t mean your boat lift is maintenance-free. Algae growth, mineral deposits, and debris buildup can still affect moving parts and reduce efficiency over time. In freshwater environments, it’s important to regularly inspect the lift for signs of wear, especially around pulleys, cables, and motor housings. Keep the lift clean by rinsing it periodically and checking for aquatic growth on submerged components. Even in freshwater, galvanic corrosion can occur—so depending on local conditions, using magnesium anodes may be advisable to protect key parts of your lift.

Saltwater Maintenance
Summer boating often means more frequent use—and more exposure to saltwater. Make it a habit to rinse your lift with freshwater after each outing. Pay extra attention to areas like the cables, pulleys, and motor housing where salt and sand can accumulate.
Tip: Avoid using high-pressure washers. A garden hose and soft spray nozzle are perfect for washing away corrosive buildup without damaging components.
Protect Lifts Against Electrolysis with Zinc Anodes
Electrolysis is a common concern in saltwater environments, where stray electrical currents can cause rapid corrosion of metal components, especially submerged parts of your boat lift. Installing zinc anodes is a smart, cost-effective way to protect your lift from this type of damage. Zinc acts as a sacrificial metal, corroding in place of more critical parts like cables, bolts, or brackets. Check your anodes regularly, especially during peak summer use. When they appear heavily corroded or reduced in size, it’s time to replace them. Properly maintained anodes can significantly extend the life of your lift and reduce costly repairs over time.

Keep Cables Clean and Lubricated
Lift cables are under constant stress, especially during a busy boating season. Examine them every few weeks for signs of fraying, rust, or kinks—especially around pulleys and attachment points. Keep them lubricated with a light marine-grade penetrating oil to protect against moisture and corrosion.
Note: Never use heavy grease on cables. It can trap dirt and sand, accelerating wear. Simply make sure cables are clean and free of debris.
Tighten Loose Hardware
More boat lifts fail from loose bolts than from broken parts. Vibration from daily use can gradually loosen fasteners, so it’s smart to check your hardware mid-season. Tighten any loose bolts and ensure all moving parts are secure.
Tip: Apply anti-seize lubricant on bolts for easier future maintenance.

Inspect Bunks for Damage
The lift’s bunks, where your boat rests, should be secure, dry, and properly aligned. Check for warped wood, sagging brackets, or worn carpet that could scratch your hull. If the carpet is holding moisture or separating, it’s time for a replacement.
Tip: For frequent boaters, consider switching to maintenance-free composite bunks to reduce seasonal upkeep.
Test Safety Features
Before heading into the peak of the boating season, test your lift’s safety systems. Confirm that limit switches are working, electrical wiring is protected, and drive motors are free of water or debris.
