Treasure hunter apprehended and arrested

The treasure hunter who raised one of the largest hauls in American history, Tommy Thompson, was arrested in West Boca Raton, Florida, in January after a two-year manhunt. Thompson found the sunken S.S. Central America off the coast of South Carolina in 1988. The ship sank in 1857 with 30,000 pounds of gold. Thompson sold treasure from the recovered vessel to a gold marketing group for $50 million. Project investors never saw any investment returns and sued. Although criminal charges were not filed against him, he is in custody until an appearance in an Ohio courtroom. Thompson was in seclusion since 2006.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife
Conservation Commission (FWC) posted results of their online Florida anchoring regulations survey. The FWC used input from public meetings and the survey to aid Florida’s legislature in drafting guidelines for new anchoring restriction laws in its first 2015 legislative session ending May 1st. Of six emergent concepts, “a setback distance where anchoring of vessels overnight in close proximity to waterfront residential property would be prohibited” is most significant. For details visit m.myfwc.com/media/2981333/Anchoring-Survey-Powerpoint.pdf.

Scientists in Charleston,
South Carolina, may soon discover what sank the Confederate submarine H.L. Hunley during the Civil War. The hand-cranked submarine raised from Charleston Harbor 15 years ago lay in a sodium hydroxide solution for 4 months last year to loosen its hull from hardened gunk. Scientists gingerly chiseled away at the coating to eventually reveal 70 percent of its hull. Perhaps the percussion of exploding gunpowder in its spar that sank the Union’s Housatonic knocked the crew unconscious.

The Florida House of Representatives
introduced a bill that defines vessels “at risk” of becoming derelict. If enacted, the legislation would define “at risk” vessels as a vessel exhibiting compartments that are designed to be sealed unsealed for an extended period of time, a vessel that is or is in danger of breaking free of its anchor, a vessel listing due to water intrusion and a vessel that is or has taken on water without an effective means of dewatering. If the bill is enacted, the occupant or registered owner can be warned or fined from $50 to $1,000 depending on the number of offenses.

If cruising near Topsail Island
and Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina, on weekends and at times during the week spring through fall, The Ice Cream Float Boat can satisfy your cravings for snacks, soft drinks and ice cream for $1-3 with on-the-water delivery. Although E15
gas with 15 percent ethanol, isn’t sold at fuel docks, mariners need to be aware that in many states the gas is found at roadway gas stations where trailered boats and jerry jugs are filled. In North Carolina, Sheetz Convenience Stores will sell the gas at 60 of their stores beginning in 2016. Any gas with 10 percent or more of ethanol can do severe damage to marine engines.

Party on the Point celebrates Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum’s 50th anniversary.

Memorial Day weekend kicks off celebrations for the 50th anniversary of the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St. Michaels, Maryland. The museum on the Miles River will host Party on the Point, which will include boat rides on historic vessels, live music, local foods, a children’s art competition, and other family activities on May 23rd. It will also feature the opening of an exhibit showcasing the most significant artifacts in its extensive collection. The museum originated as an idea by a group of community members and the Talbot Historical Society in 1963, and took shape with the purchase of three historic houses along the town harbor in 1965. Adjacent property at Navy Point was also purchased and through the years additional planning and funding has created 12 exhibit buildings, a library and growing collections of regional maritime memorabilia. Today more than 68,000 guests from all over the world visit the museum annually by land and sea. Plenty of docking is available in the harbor area. Call (410) 745-2916 or visit cbmm.org.

Maryland Safety Certification

Make sure you have a Certificate of Boating Safety Education this summer on the Chesapeake, which is required for anyone born on or after July 1, 1972 to operate a mechanically propelled vessel on Maryland waters. U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary units offer safety courses throughout the Mid-Atlantic, and the Annapolis unit is hosting a safety course June 2-8 at the firehouse on Taylor Avenue. Boating safety courses are available online but this program offers the opportunity to ask questions and to get answers in-person from experienced mariners. annapoliscgaux.org

Shakedown at the pirate fest

A fun, early-season cruising destination on the Chesapeake is the annual Blackbeard Pirate Festival in Hampton, Virginia. This year’s festival runs Saturday and Sunday, May 30-31. Travel back in time to the scene of the The Customs House in Hampton, which regulated the export of tobacco to England and the import of manufactured commodities to the colonies. Convinced that Blackbeard and other pirates were operating under the protection of North Carolina, Governor Spotswood of Virginia sent an expedition from Hampton to capture or kill Blackbeard and his crew. The mission was successful.

This year’s action will include reenactments of street skirmishes between pirates and the militia and full-scale sea battles in the Hampton Harbor. Onlookers can also enjoy the waterfront view where tall ships will tower over sail and powerboats decked out in their own pirate gear. The festival is free and open to the public. Docking space is available at the Hampton Public Piers, Customs House Marina, Bluewater Marina, and Sunset Boating Center.

Jacksonville, Florida

Cruisers willing to make the 21-nautical-mile detour from the ICW on Florida’s northern Atlantic coast will find a beautiful, year-round port at Jacksonville, Florida.

Those who take the delightful side trip and venture up the St. Johns River can enjoy two stops here, one on each side of the river. Jacksonville has been a popular winter resort since the Civil War, and cruisers enjoy the city’s annual average of 300 sunny days at docks on both sides of the river.

A favorite stop for mariners is Jacksonville Landing, which hosts more than 350 events each year, live weekend outdoor entertainment, lots of dining options, and an indoor shopping mall. Dock alongside to be in the heart of the action, but watch for strong currents during mid-tide.

Once you’re tied up, leave the driving to someone else. The water taxi traverses the river with stops at River City Marina, the Landing and the Metropolitan Park Marina. On shore, the Riverside Trolley can get you to Publix grocery store for provisioning in about 10 minutes. Then return to the Landing for an evening of people watching, waterfront dining, drinks, and entertainment. On the south side of the river, try Ruth’s Chris Steak House, the Chart House or River City Brewery at River City Marina. An interesting eatery with a southwest flavor is the Mossfire Grill (904-355-4434; mossfire.com) named for the moss-stuffed mattress company whose warehouse caught fire and burned down the city 100 years ago. It’s a cab ride from the docks but worth the trip just for its “Ka-pow” spicy seafood tacos or Mossfire crabcakes with chipotle lime mayo.

[photomosaic ids=”4568,4569,4570,4571″ orderby=”rand”]

A great way to see the city—and work off the extra calories—is the Downtown Top to Bottom Walking Tour, which meets on Tuesdays at 10am at the Jacksonville Landing escalators. You’ll tour the city’s tallest office buildings, get a bird’s eye view of Jacksonville and the St. Johns River, and explore secret underground bank tunnels for $15 per person (904-827-1845; visitjacksonville.com/events/jacksonville-top-tobottom- walking-tour).

Also recommended are two dinghy excursions from your downtown slip. Just head to the small free day dock at the Saturday Riverside Arts and Farmers Market (904-389-2449; riversideartsmarket.com), held March through December near the I-95 bridge over the St. Johns River. Enjoy live entertainment ranging from barbershop quartets to bellydancers, and shop for locallymade pottery, paintings, jewelry, accessories, as well as fresh local produce, meats, honey, plants, and spices. Stop in next door at the Cummer Museum (904-356- 6857; cummer.org) for a pleasant walk through manicured gardens. Then take your dinghy downriver (toward the ICW) to the Trout River and turn north. Before the Main Street Bridge, you’ll find a long dock belonging to the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens. While the alongside depth at low tide is just one foot, when you dock here, admission to the zoo is free. October brings a pumpkincarving contest and haunted house, and the zoo will be celebrating its centennial in 2014 with special events and exhibits (904-757-4463; jacksonvillezoo.org).

If you’re a music lover, the Jacksonville Jazz Festival is held Memorial Day weekend, right in the heart of Jacksonville. This free street party features four stages scattered in the downtown corridor, and has showcased the likes of Natalie Cole and Herbie Hancock. During the festival, check out local artists displaying their wares in the Art in the Heart Downtown juried art show, and grab a glass or two at the Wine Down/Brew Town Tasting Experience.

In a nod to more than a century of local filmmaking history, the Jacksonville Film Festival, held every October, features premieres and parties where you can hobnob with celebrities. While starting long ago with silent films, well-known contemporary movies like G.I. Jane and the Manchurian Candidate continue to be filmed in the area.

For events all year long, visit Metropolitan Park and Marina. One highlight is the annual Southeast U.S. Boat Show, held in mid-April. The three-day event includes seminars, live music and a broad selection of power and sailboats, kayaks and marine accessories. Later in April, check out the Welcome to Rockville Festival; 2013’s event featured headlining performances from Alice in Chains, Jacksonville’s own Limp Bizkit and local legend Lynyrd Skynyrd. And where else can you dock your craft and walk to an NFL game? You can even tailgate on your boat before heading over to EverBank Field for a Jaguars game in the fall. If collegiate football and more tailgating sound good, try the annual Florida/Georgia game, accompanied by what’s billed as the “World’s Largest Cocktail Party.”

Lake Park Harbor Marina, Lake Park, FL

Lake Park Harbor Marina

Lake Park Harbor Marina is a full-service wet storage facility with two boat launch ramps, a fueling facility, ship store, pump-out facilities, as well as floating and fixed piers that can accommodate boats up to 80’ in length.

The marina was built in 1961 and was redeveloped in 2006.

Jamie Hart, an employee of the Town of Lake Park, has been the Marina Director there since June 2012. He was previously the Supervisor of Marine Facilities for the City of Fort Lauderdale for about 25 years.

Hart says cruisers should come to Lake Park Harbor because it offers the second lowest rates in the area (next to the City of Riviera Beach). “We are presently in the process of lowering our rates,” Hart says. “When approved by the Town Commission, we will have the lowest rates in the area, according to a survey previously conducted of marinas within a 2-3 mile radius.”

Lake Park Harbor Marina offers clean facilities, impeccable service, and lots of activities available, including fishing tournaments, charter dive boat operations, and a Sunset Celebration the last Friday of every month.

Hart says most of the marina’s customers prefer the floating docks, due to how easily accessible it is from the ICW. “The facility has a large amount of property and grassy area that is conducive for events and similar activities, unlike most marinas.” They anticipate adding events to the calendar during the next year in order to take advantage of the extra space and increase the exposure of the marina.

There are a lot of things that set Lake Park Marina apart from other marinas in the area. “There are several marinas in the vicinity of the Lake Worth Inlet,” divulges Hart. “But the Lake Park Harbor Marina is the only marina within a close proximity to the inlet that has a breakwater for protection of boats docked along the ICW.”

In other words, the ICW is very rough due to the adjacent boating activity or during a storm. However, the boats docked at their marina are fully protected from wake damage, whereas the boats docked at other marinas are fully exposed to excessive wake because they do not have sufficient breakwater for protection purposes. “This is a big plus for our marina because we are the only marina in the area that can legitimately provide safe harbor for boats during rough conditions or during a hurricane,” Hart says.

It’s also the only marina in the North Palm Beach area that allows overnight boat trailer parking for over 48 hours.

It also has dive, yacht and sail charters, boat rentals, a diving center, jet-ski rentals, as well as many casual and fine dining options, such as Texas de Brazil and Monty’s Sunset Raw Bar. It is close to the famous Art Deco District and within walking distance of South Beach.

Marieke van Peer, the marina manager since 2005, raves about its location. “Our guests love the location, it really can’t be beaten,” she says. “Add that to the fact that we are on Government Cut and there are no bridges to navigate and you’ve got a sweet location.”
The marina has been around since the early 1990s and has never stopped adapting to the boating enthusiast’s preferences. “We have a high-speed diesel pump on our fuel dock to help facilitate bulk fuel. We also have a Tarpon Lagoon Dive Shop where you can get your diving certification squared away,” van Peer says. The facility is getting ready to build more lift slips on the south end of the marina. “These are owner operated rather than dry stack where you have to schedule boat access,” she explains.
