A Tale of Three Cities

Lose Yourself in Virginia's Historic Triangle

In 1607, 104 British settlers landed on the banks of the James River, 60 miles from the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, set up a fort and began their life on a new continent. Little did these hardy settlers know what they were about to start. Jamestown was the first permanent British colony and nearby Williamsburg became the political, cultural and social capital of the England’s America, while Yorktown was the site of the last major battle of the Revolutionary War, which ushered in the end of the British rule.

These three cities make up Virginia’s Historic Triangle, which sits on the Gloucester Peninsula formed by the James and the York rivers. Jamestown is about 35 miles upriver from Norfolk and Newport News, where the James River empties into the Chesapeake Bay. This puts it a short cruise from the northern reach of the Atlantic ICW. The York River meets the Bay about 30 miles farther north. ...
