PowerFurl’s a Game Changer

GMT Composites says it has cured the problems that have kept many sailors from installing in-boom furling. A collaboration between GMT Composites, John Alden Design, and High Modulus has produced PoweFurl. It’s an easy and effective way to manage large mainsails, without losing performance, for boats from 45 feet to 120 feet. The furling motor is located inside the mandrel, rather than the mast. The GMT PowerFurl boom’s forward end is open, leaving no place for the sail to snag. The company says the main can be furled on any point of sail, and raised whether head to wind or beam reaching. The Summer of the 70

There’s excitement in the air in New Gretna, New Jersey as Viking’s new 70 Convertible prepares to launch this summer. Krogen 52 Has Big Boat Ideas

Maintaining Kadey-Krogen’s adherence to architectural integrity, the Krogen 52 is constructed with entirely new tooling, not by “stretching” the hull of a smaller model. The builder of Selene Ocean Trawlers, Jet Tern Marine, announces a new line of Howard Chen-designed yachts built at their Zhu-Hai yard in China. The Artemis line was developed in response to consumer demand for a high performance yacht. Recent sea trials saw a top speed of 23 knots with twin Yanmar 380 horsepower engines. Cruiser Expo is set for January 15, 16, and 17, within the 36th Annual Stuart Boat Show in Stuart, Florida. Formerly known as Trawler Expo, reconfiguring the show as “Cruiser Expo” reflects the growing number of people who are cruising extensively in all types of vessels including motoryachts, sport yachts, express cruisers, sailboats and sportfishermen as well as trawlers, says organizer Rick Allen.
“The focus of the event to is gather people who enjoy the lifestyle of cruising in a social environment that also includes education, information and products—all in one place,” he says. Drawing on last year’s success, 26 daily seminars are planned covering a wide range of cruising topics. Southern Boating Contributing Editor, Chuck Husick, has taken the reins as author and editor of the renowned Chapman: Piloting and Seamanship. Longtime Editor Elbert “Mack” Maloney stepped down after the publishing of the 65th edition of the reference book, which is handed down through generations. Chuck, who has been part of several editions, regularly contributes his expertise to Southern Boating’s Engine Room and What’s New in Electronics Departments, and is a member of the BoatU.S. National Advisory Council and former president of Chris-Craft.
