One Horizon That’s Not Too Far

The latest Horizon Elegance 88, scheduled to make its appearance at Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in October, features a completely open main deck floor plan with a view from the aft deck door all the way forward to the country kitchen windows. Abaft of the country kitchen, a formal dining table seats eight, The yacht was conceived with the enclosed bridge, rather than as an open bridge as is generally done with new model introductions, says Roger Sowerbutts of Horizon Yachts. ”This gives the design a more flowing look than if the enclosed bridge was done as an after thought.”
The American-style interior is high-gloss walnut, offset with light camphor wood on the main deck. The lower deck, which features four staterooms, including a full-beam master amidships, will present a lighter ambiance afforded by the use of beech and maple burl. horizonyacht.com

GMT Composites says it has cured the problems that have kept many sailors from installing in-boom furling. A collaboration between GMT Composites, John Alden Design, and High Modulus has produced PoweFurl. It’s an easy and effective way to manage large mainsails, without losing performance, for boats from 45 feet to 120 feet. The furling motor is located inside the mandrel, rather than the mast. The GMT PowerFurl boom’s forward end is open, leaving no place for the sail to snag. The company says the main can be furled on any point of sail, and raised whether head to wind or beam reaching. GMT says its carbon furling booms are approximately half the weight of comparable aluminum systems. gmtcomposites.com

Why, it’s both; it’s two-in-one.
It quickly became one of its most successful models, evolving over the years to include both Flybridge and Motoryacht versions. Now in June the company is poised to launch the T44 MK II.
New Cummins 550-hp common rail, fully electronic engines will power the T44 MK II at predicted cruising speeds of up to 30 knots. The redesigned pilothouse offers incredible sightlines and 360-degree visibility for both the helmsman and guests. Optional layouts include one or two sleeping cabins. Sliding side windows and overhead hatches introduce plenty of light and fresh air. Hinckley’s patented JetStick steering and control system incorporates the latest electronic technology and it is, of course, integrated with a powerful hydraulic bow thruster that allows any helmsperson to move the vessel sideways with just two fingers on the controls. hinckleyyachts.com

IsatPhone Pro will provide the ultimate combination of an easy-to-use robust handset with long battery life, a reliable network connection with clear voice quality, and global coverage.
The IsatPhone Pro will support satellite telephony (including Bluetooth for hands free use) voice mail, text and e-mail messaging and location data.
The Wearable Towel is imported directly from the Denizli region of Turkey and is ultra absorbent—each square yard weighs a full 16 ounces (that’s a pound).
With three arm openings evenly placed along the side of the towel, you can stay confidently, completely, comfortably, covered, while having the freedom to use your hands. So whether you’re at home, the spa, on the boat or at the beach, you can lie on it, use it to dry off, but most important, you can wear it. The Wearable Towel does not employ any fasteners, is unisex and can be worn in either a tunic or toga style. This novel configuration is patent-pending worldwide, currently available in five sizes and comes in red, white and blue. It is accepted as formal wear in some rather informal places—if not, it should be. $19.95 + S&H wearabletowel.info

Raillight Mini is a solar-powered, stainless-steel, LED light fixture that will come in handy on your boat. During the day it charges via the solar panel mounted on its top. At night push the weatherproof switch under the cap to turn it on. It works either manually or automatically and will last eight hours when fully charged.
A QuickMount rail clamp makes it easy to pop the light out and take it with you, or leave it lit aboard and use it for vessel identification in a crowded anchorage, or just to light your dock steps or boarding ladder. The UV-proof lens won’t yellow or cloud-up, the dual reflector and textured lens disperse light evenly, and 304-grade stainless steel prevents rust. $29.95 + S&H sollight.com

The Summer of the 70

There’s excitement in the air in New Gretna, New Jersey as Viking’s new 70 Convertible prepares to launch this summer. The yacht bears a resemblance to Viking’s 82- and 76-footers. The aggressively raked stem, featuring better than eight feet of freeboard forward, is designed to make small work out of large head seas. Likewise, the freeboard is an indication of the significant headroom beneath the flush foredeck.
Its 208 square-foot cockpit, with an observation mezzanine, provides ample stowage, multiple freezers, a refrigerated drink box in the salon entrance step, plenty of drawers, and engine room access. The lower cockpit provides a sizeable fish box, stowage and an available live well beneath the molded nonslip sole. A transom fish box/live well also is available.
Viking’s flying bridge layout, with its tournament-proven center console helm, features a trio of adjustable Murray Products helm seats with teak-ladder backs. Additional seating is provided with port and starboard lounges each with rod stowage below and aft facing jump seats. Ahead of the command console is a third lounge, as well as a sink, freezer and drink box cooler. Below, the four-stateroom, four-head layout utilizes space for maximum comfort and privacy. vikingyachts.com

Cruisers Yachts Asks the Users

That’s exactly what Cruisers Yachts did before launching its new, improved 470 Sports Coupe design. “We thought the Miami Boat Show would be the perfect venue to get valuable feedback from our customers about what they wanted to see in this newest addition to the Cruisers Yachts line-up,” said Jon Viestenz, Cruisers Yachts product manager. Out of the four line-drawings on display, people were asked to identify which concept would get them most excited to buy. The new 2010 styling touts sharper, more defined lines and is a much edgier design compared to the original 470 concept released in 2009. Set to make its official debut this summer, the new 470 SC will come standard with IPS and Cruisers Yachts’ signature walk-through windshield. It features a wenge wood interior and a glass-enclosed helm with a sliding aft door. cruisersyachts.com

You apply sunscreen to protect your skin, then you sweat and your eyes burn. Nevermore. Z Blok sunscreen’s fragrance-free formula does not burn or sting when water or perspiration causes it to migrate into the eyes. So say the Puma Ocean Racing Team, which tested it during the grueling Volvo Around the World Race. According to the Puma Team Skipper, Ken Read, “The entire crew are true believers. We certainly put sunscreen to a test that few others can—and we are wet a lot!” 4 ounce tube $14.95 zbloksun.com

The AnchorSuit is a neoprene cover that softens all those impact points of a fluke-style anchor. Any of three sizes prevents damage to your boat while the anchor is stowed onboard, and provides safety while anchored on the beach.
Whether hanging from the pulpit or stored in the anchor locker the anchor can wear the suit. If you’re anchoring on the beach simply free up the flukes and dig it into the sand, like you always do. The suit makes it visible and will help eliminate stubbed toes. $69.95-$89.95 anchorsuit.com

The yacht features a fully covered aft deck that opens onto a spacious saloon through aluminum weather-tight doors. Moving forward and to starboard is the gourmet galley complete with a full-size Jennair refrigerator and a Viking range. Like her larger sister, the 52 has a weather-tight Dutch door providing direct access to the starboard side deck from the galley. The wheelhouse is a few steps up and has dual helm seats. Owners will select between three cabins or two with an office/lounge. Standard power is from a single John Deere 6068AFM75 231-hp engine. Range is expected to be in excess of 3,000 miles at seven knots on 1,400 gallons of fuel. Top speed is 9.5 knots. Hull No. 1 is scheduled to arrive in the U.S. during the summer of 2011. kadeykrogen.com

Using advanced software techniques, (it can retrofit any Wesmar system), the technology constantly samples a proprietary multi-axis gyro memorizing the vessel’s roll characteristics, predicting and then preempting vessel roll. Three system options are offered: DSP4801Standard Digital Stabilization controls roll and heave, and includes on-screen display of fin movement in real time. DSP4802 Digital Stabilization and Lift maintains the fins in a positive lift position during all stabilization movement for maximum fuel economy. DSP4803 Digital Stabilization, Lift and At Anchor monitors incoming swells and automatically controls fins to reduce their effect. Wesmar.com

This patented fitting is plumbed between the raw water inlet and the user unit. The SSA monitors the flow and wirelessly sends an audible and visual alarm to the control panel to warn you before an engine notices the lack of flow. Using the SSA, you will have more time to act—it alerts you approximately seven seconds faster than conventional sensors—before the engine needs to shut down or damage occurs. If flow in any one of the connected systems is reduced below a pre-established “normal flow” threshold, you are alerted at the helm. groco.net

The fact that it’s the coolest way to instantly adjust fender height is a bonus. You can order it either straight or bent (at a 30-degree angle) with one or two line tubes. Just insert the anodized aluminum spike in a rod holder, run a fender line through the 5/8-inch, ABS line-tube, make a loop over the end and your fender will stay where you put it. A light pull on the line adjusts the height. fenderspike.com

Not for Navigation is appropriately named and also a reminder of what not to do, tempting as it may be, with this line of bags. Heather Jernegan creates custom canvas handbags featuring authentic nautical charts. The line consists of 13 bag styles—totes, duffles, messenger bags—and a pillow that are customizable with any nautical chart, spanning from Hawaii to the Caribbean and everywhere in between. (There are also a few Netherlands’ charts.) The bags are made in the USA, custom silkscreened (logos too) onto all-natural cotton canvas, using water-based ink and hand sewn for maximum durability. notfornavigation.com.

The new 43 brings the outdoors in, creating an alfresco environment with a seamless transition between the expansive cockpit and the contemporary interior with clever convertible seating for indoor dining and a low-profile galley up. Below decks are accommodations for up to five in two staterooms. “This model recognizes that the ways people use their boats are changing,” notes Neil. “A flybridge boat is not just used for fishing; they’re extensively used for entertaining and cruising.” The flybridge, accessible from the cockpit via a ‘stair-ladder’, offers 360° vision, thanks to a new structural hard top. Swivel companion and helm seats are joined by front-of-the-console seating for four in an L-shaped lounge around a table. A wet bar with settee on the port side completes the comforts. Top speed is expected to be 31 knots with 28 knots cruising speed. Riviera.com.au

The Yacht Sentinel YS-3 is a real time 24/7 monitoring system that reports information on any boat systems you select. The keys to this product’s ease of use are its miniature wireless, self-powered radio transceivers installed on bilge pumps, smoke detectors, high water alarms, batteries, and shore power, plus intrusion sensors, and motion detectors. Any number of sensors can be included based on the size or complexity of the vessel. The unit is also a geofence for confirming or tracking vessel location.
The system automatically monitors and reports conditions based on customizable parameters you set. You select who should be notified (up to 99 people) and how to contact them in case of an alarm condition. Within seconds of an alarm, messages can be sent via phone, cell, text, pager, email or fax to your designees and appear on the boat’s Web page. It’s easy to view system history, current conditions or change settings from any Web-enabled device. The control unit operates on 12V or 24V and contains a tiny computer, GPS, radio, wireless sensors, and backup power supply. From $3,500. yachtwatchman.com

Pulsifer Boat Builder of Brunswick, Maine, which are, in turn, based on an early-1900s lobsterboat, but it’s powered by a Steyer diesel hybrid engine and solar panels and built of cold-molded carbon fiber and fiberglass. frenchwebb.com; 207-338-6706.

Sabre Yachts launched its first Sabre 40 Sedan in early June. The concept behind the design is to give boat owners the same level of luxury and ease of operation that they enjoy in their homes and cars on the water. This sedan can be operated from the comfort of the interior, or from the openness of the optional flybridge. The hull is infusion molded, which uses less resin than traditional fiberglass lay up, resulting in a greener, lighter and more fuel-efficient boat. The Zeus pod drive system makes maneuvering in tight spaces a snap. sabreyachts.com.

Low-Flow Pressure

In the process of redesigning water-saving, low-flow shower heads for hotels, colleges and cruise ships, Norwegian engineer Finn Larsen invented a product that’s perfect for recreational boating, solving both low water pressure and tank limitations with a turbine vane and a new shape for the inside of the showerhead. When water reaches the showerhead, it rebounds from the underside of the vane and is retained in an expansion chamber where it builds up pressure. When the pressure reaches a certain level, the water bounces back and out of the chamber–about 30 times per second.
