With so many May events to choose from throughout The Bahamas, cruisers will be hard-pressed to pick their favorite. If you’ve yet to cross the “Stream,” it’s definitely time to head on over and sample some of the many festivals serving delectable food, fishing tournaments laced with fun social events, and sailing regattas. Summer cruisers who are new to The Bahamas and uncomfortable making the trip alone should check out The Bahamas Boating Flings sponsored by The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism. Cruisers cross the Gulf Stream to The Bahamas as a group starting from the Bahia Mar Yachting Center in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Trips run Thursdays through Sundays during June and July, with mandatory attendance at a pre-departure captain’s meeting. Dockage space is on a firstcome, first-served basis, and the minimum boat length is 22 feet. Call 1-800-32-SPORT (77678) for more information or register at bahamas.com/fling-register, but do it soon; the 30-boat limit per fling is reached quickly. Dates are subject to change but at press time were as follows: June 4-8 to Bimini; 11-15 to Port Lucaya Marina, Grand Bahama Island (242) 373-9090 or (561) 290-4792; 18-22 to Bimini; 25-29 to Port Lucaya Marina, Grand Bahama Island; July 9-20 to Bimini/Chub Cay/Nassau/Staniel Cay, Exuma; 23-27 to Bimini.
