Junkanoo participants spend all year preparing elaborate costumes for the important cultural tradition.

Junkanoo Parade. The Junkanoo festival is an important cultural tradition in The Bahamas, and Junkanoo participants spend all year preparing elaborate costumes and practicing for their musical performance. The most spectacular Junkanoo parades happen at 1am on Boxing Day (December 26) and again on New Year’s morning. Weather is always a consideration as the costumes are large and heavy, and strong wind or rain is destructive to the ornate and fragile paper costumes. On Boxing Day, the celebration follows a parade route through the streets, and the bands show off their finest moves as they pass the judging stand. There is intense competition among the groups, and bragging rights for Junkanoo championships are highly coveted.
