A recent presentation about the progress of “cleaning up” Lake Pontchartrain included a tour of the lakeshore on the north side of New Orleans and the New Canal Lighthouse. The lighthouse has been restored and now houses a museum and education center for the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation (LPBF), which is dedicated to keeping the lake clean and maintaining a healthy environment. The lighthouse sits across the canal from the Southern Yacht Club—one of the oldest such clubs on the Gulf—and at a popular entry point to the lake. It was also one of the areas hard hit by Hurricane Katrina.
