Sir Michael Fay is known to the America’s Cup community through backing the New Zealand challenging efforts in 1987 with the first fiberglass 12 Metre ever built. Although beaten by Dennis Conner’s team in the 1987 Louis Vuitton Cup, the challenger series for the America’s Cup, and accused of cheating by Conner himself, he was hooked and formulated a daring assault. Representing the Mercury Bay Boating Club in Whitianga, New Zealand, he launched a challenge that hadn’t been seen in decades.
