North Carolina’s first Colonial capital, Edenton— located on Albemarle Sound near the Chowan River—was founded on November 6, 1712 and continues its 300th anniversary celebrations with a wide variety of events. Once the second largest port in the state, Edenton played a significant role in helping slaves escape through the Maritime Underground Railroad.
