Emancipation Day—celebrated on the first Monday in August—commemorates the emancipation of slaves in the country when the British Parliament abolished slavery throughout the British Empire with the passage of the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833. It is an ongoing recognition of the importance of this turning point in the history of The Bahamas.
