Opti Regatta sets sail in St. Thomas like ducks to water, over 100 Optimist sailors from several Caribbean islands, U.S. states and European countries set sail June 17-23 in the International Optimist Regatta presented by Glacial Energy and hosted out of the U.S. Virgin Islands’ St. Thomas Yacht Club. It’s amazing to see how these tiny tykes and teens maneuver the 8-foot single-sail dinghies in the typical 10- to 15-knot-plus tradewinds and waves high enough to surf. Racing takes place within sight of the yacht club’s deck right off Cowpet Bay. “Our event is more than just a regatta,” explains organizer Margo Lynch.
