Gulf Coast-West

SB0413-Gulf-WestThe pirate Jean Lafitte really got around. Nearly every port on the western Gulf has local legends of Lafi tte, including Galveston, Texas, which was one of his documented strongholds. The legend claims his crew rowed small boats across Galveston Bay and far up Chocolate Bayou to bury pirate’s gold. Similar tales are told as far south as Corpus Christi and Padre Island, and to the east as far as New Orleans. Lake Charles, Louisiana, feels strongly enough about the pirate connection to celebrate The Contraband Days Louisiana Pirate Festival, this year from April 30 to May 12 at the Lake Charles Civic Center. Lake Charles is easily reached by boat from the ICW, and transient dockage is available at marinas and some of the casino/hotel projects on the water. Call (800) 456-7952 or go to contrabanddays.com.
