The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) voted in December to limit the commercial catch of menhaden by 20 percent, prompting many conservation groups to claim victory. Regulators voted for the harvest reduction at a meeting in Baltimore that drew hundreds of activists wearing “Fight for Menhaden” buttons and shirts. But, according to the Chesapeake Bay Ecological Foundation headed by Jim Price, the commission’s decision did not go far enough to protect the future of menhaden and dependent striped bass.
