Only second to a PFD, the best safety device to have on any boat is a handheld marine-band radio. Fixed mount VHF radios, GPS receivers and AIS transponders all enable the mariner’s safety, but a handheld VHF radio is the ultimate means of communication—providing reliability in ways that other devices cannot. It can be carried on your person and works even when a boat’s power source is out. Handhelds average 5 to 6 watts of RF output, which allows communication with other vessels for several miles on the open waters.
