Twelve of the best national youth sailing teams will compete in the Selection Series for the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup February 9-24 in San Francisco, California. For two weeks, contestants aged 19-24 compete to reach the final round September 1-4. Teams are chosen based on their sailing skills, teamwork and fitness levels.
2012 Orange Bowl Regatta amasses record attendance
Registration numbers got a 20 percent boost for the 2012 Orange Bowl International Youth Regatta held December 27-30, 2012. Miami, Florida’s Coral Reef Yacht Club hosted 649 sailors from 27 countries and 25 states. Between sailors, parents, siblings, volunteers, and spectators, more than 2,000 attended the Regatta, as well as 100 coaches and 75 support and spectator boats. Among other racing classes, Biscayne Bay featured 333 Optimist Dinghy sailors—the largest group ever for this event. Light winds defined the fi rst day but by the final day winds blew 10-12 knots, which made for perfect sailing.
First-time sailors competed against some of the best in the world. Besides racing activities, there were planned dinners and nightly events. Biscayne Bay Yacht Club hosted “College Night,” where more than 30 college coaches from all over the nation congregated to meet 200 prospective high school sailors.
