Dolphin killer loose on the Gulf Coast

Dolphins in the northern Gulf have endured the oil spill and the dead zone but now they have a real predator, a serial killer. Four dead dolphins have been found so far, including one on Deer Island with a portion of its jaw missing, and another near Gautier, Mississippi, with a 9mm bullet wound. “We think there’s someone or some group on a rampage,” says Moby Solangi, executive director of the Institute for Marine Mammal Studies (IMMS) in Gulfport—the organization responsible for recovering the dolphins and performing a necropsy to determine the cause of death. The fine for killing a dolphin can range upwards of $100,000 and one year in jail. Rewards for reporting an offender are offered by authorities and concerned citizens.
