2013 marks the 500th anniversary of Don Juan Ponce de Leon’s landing in 1513 after which he named the area “La Florida” and claimed it for Spain. It wasn’t until 1565, however, that Spanish Admiral Don Pedro Menendez de Aviles landed and King Phillip II subsequently named him governor, an action that “officially” formed the city and makes St. Augustine the oldest European settlement in the U.S. If you happen to miss the 500-year celebration of Don Juan’s landing, plan for the 450th anniversary of Don Pedro’s in 2015.
