Like the Kleenex brand of facial tissue and Band-Aid brand of adhesive bandages, Eisenglass is now virtually synonymous with the flexible window material in marine enclosures. The difference is that Eisenglass has not existed as a brand for over 40 years. What mariners refer to as “eisenglass” is actually three completely different materials—roll vinyl, polycarbonate or acrylic—each of which has advantages and disadvantages. Polycarbonate and acrylic windows are semi-flexible and cannot be rolled but offer superior clarity and durability at a superior price. This article, however, addresses the care of roll vinyl material.
