Mariners headed south for the winter should be vigilant about checking for shoaling conditions while transiting the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. As an example, last year a storm caused shoaling near the center span of the Herbert C. Bonner Bridge at Oregon Inlet, North Carolina, lowering the channel depth from 18 feet to less than 3 feet. Unfortunately, severe shoaling is becoming more common in many areas…
