Some people find the process of building a yacht as satisfying as cruising in the finished vessel, and the owner of the 2011 Hargrave 136 Tri-Deck Motor Yacht DREAMER must be one of them. DREAMER is the third yacht he has built with Hargrave, following the 92-foot Babe, launched in 2000, and 105-foot Dream, which debuted in 2006. Moving up to a composite vessel of the size and complexity of DREAMER necessitated a change of construction facility, and ultimately Hargrave selected TSMM Teknecilik Shipyard in Antalya, Turkey, for the project.
“The owner wanted high-tech composite construction and there are very few yards in the world that have that process at this size range,” said Hargrave CEO Mike Joyce, adding that DREAMER is also Hargrave’s first yacht built to RINA (Registro Italiano Navale) yacht classification standards, a certification that will enhance her resale value both in the U.S. and Europe.
“I think the real reason this project was so successful was because the shipyard had already gone through the learning curve for high-tech composite construction years before we showed up and already had a great working relationship with High Modulus, which was our top choice for engineering,” Mike said. “High Modulus worked seamlessly with our design department in creating our first Hargrave with this new facility, and the whole process was relatively smooth.”
The owner designed the yacht’s interior himself, working closely with Hargrave’s team to create a look that he describes as “fluid.” Sweeping curves define the built-in cabinetry. Furnishings and even the flooring draw the eye with a smooth, unbroken flow from one area to the next. The style is sleekly contemporary, with rich mahogany woodwork complemented by soft ultrasuede panels on the walls. Ample windows let in lots of light.
One of the many highlights of the yacht’s interior layout is the full-beam master stateroom, located forward on the main deck. With 7’4″ headroom and a king berth with a floor-to-ceiling headboard upholstered in crocodile leather, “master” is a fitting description for this cabin. Its full entertainment system includes a 46-inch plasma TV, Blu-Ray player and iPod/iPhone docking station. The ensuite head is also impressive, featuring a “river” of glass tiles installed by artisans at the Turkish shipyard.

Four more ensuite staterooms lie on the lower deck, including three large VIPs (one with built-in bunk beds for the grandkids) and a guest cabin with twin berths plus a Pullman berth. This gives the yacht the capacity to accommodate up to 11 guests overnight. A washer/dryer in the lower deck foyer allows guests to do their own laundry, however DREAMER is fully staffed by a professional crew led by Captain Sharon Buttemer. Daily service for the staterooms is facilitated by a door that leads from one of the guest heads to the six-person crew quarters finished to nearly the same high level as the rest of the yacht.
As a departure from most megayachts, the galley is not the sole province of the crew. Located on the main deck, it was designed by the owner, who enjoys preparing gourmet meals, including sushi, at sea. It is fully equipped with upscale appliances including a Viking six-burner range, Wolf double oven with warming drawers, two Sub-Zero refrigerator/freezers, a Sub-Zero 78-bottle dual-zone wine cooler and a Fisher Paykel double-drawer dishwater. An elliptical island, built of mahogany with a CeasarStone countertop, is a unique feature that marries utility with design. Equally eye-catching is the eat-in galley’s dinette with its high backrest.
The main-deck saloon and formal dining area are beautifully appointed for entertaining, with Italian-made Formenti leather furnishings. This Tri-Deck Motoryacht also has a large skylounge on its bridge deck—yet another elegant space to entertain or relax in, chat at the bar, play cards, watch a movie on the 65-inch plasma TV, or enjoy a meal at the round mahogany table—one of a handful of inviting places to dine onboard DREAMER, including the open-air flybridge above.
The pilothouse helm station features a suite of the latest Furuno navigation and communications equipment, along with a Simrad autopilot, ACR searchlight and FLIR thermal camera. Redundant instruments can also be found on the flybridge, which has a second fully equipped helm station. The owner frequently drove his smaller Hargrave yachts, said Capt. Sharon, who began working for him as a deckhand on Babe and credits him for encouraging her to earn her captain’s ticket. With the 136-foot DREAMER, however, he sits back and enjoys the view.
The yacht’s Schneider Monitoring System, which has multiple touchscreen displays throughout the yacht—and the Marinelec General Alarm and Fire Detection Systems—enhance the safety and efficiency of DREAMER’s operations. In addition, the well-laid-out engine room features a no-expense spared list of equipment, including an Alfa Laval fuel-polishing system, Atlas ShorPower converter, and MarineAir air-conditioning system with three 10-ton chillers. The yacht also has a Naiad stabilization system as well as state-of-the-art sound suppression.
Equipped with a dive locker in the lazarette and a spacious water-sports platform, the yacht makes a great base for diving and snorkeling adventures.
With a range of 3,300 nautical miles, DREAMER has already proven the seaworthiness of her Hargrave hull. Launched last summer, she served as a “drive-away” vessel for the owner who cruised the Turkish coast, Greek Islands and Croatia before shipping the yacht to the Caribbean for the winter season. She then cruised to Florida and was displayed at the Palm Beach International Boat Show. From the top of DREAMER’s radar arch to her flawless fiberglass hull, this new flagship is a sensational showcase for Hargrave’s boat-building prowess.
