New Bridge, Shakespeare and Development

New bridge for Lucayan waterway

The Grand Bahama Development Company and The Grand Bahama Port Authority, Limited, recently announced plans for the construction of a new four-lane bridge across the Grand Lucayan Waterway at Grand Bahama Highway and Fortune Bay Drive, replacing the Casuarina Bridge. Construction, which will have some impact on the channel opening, is expected to begin in October.
Also in Grand Bahama news, the 16-year-old Port Lucaya Resort and Yacht Club closed indefinitely on August 31 pending securing additional investment for modernization.

Shakespeare in paradise?

Of course! This annual cultural festival is held in Nassau and this year performances will be held October 5–12. The theater productions have expanded beyond the Bard’s work to include contemporary plays and a docu-musical, “Music in the Bahamas: Its Roots, Rythm and Personality.” Last produced in 2003, it promises to introduce new audiences to the origins and development of indigenous Bahamian music. The festival also includes a production of “The Tempest,” “Zora,” “Love in Two Acts,” “One White One Black,” and a show by Caribbean storyteller Ken Corsbie. Visit shakespeareinparadise.org.

EDI moves ahead on Staniel Cay

If you liked the scenery of the 2007 swimsuit shoot location, Ellis Diversified International (EDI), developer of Kayu Maya, is developing the infrastructure for the five remaining lots in Ocean Ridge on Staniel Cay, so named for its 40-foot elevation. Each lot stretches from ocean to the private marina, which accommodates boats up to 50 feet with five foot draft. A slip comes with each lot purchase. Lot prices range from $1.75 million to $2 million. For information, visit ellisdiversified.com.
